Allow selection of keyboard layout in controls settings

Post by wuigukin »

I used to use an alternative keyboard layout driven by software (ie, installing the keyboard layout on Windows). Wube is amazing, and the hotkeys in Factorio would automatically adjust to conform to the keyboard layout in use.

However, I've now switched to a QMK powered keyboard, where layouts are managed by the controller on the keyboard itself, and not software on the OS. Factorio is unable to detect that I'm using a different layout now.

Current workaround: I'm using a toggle on the keyboard to swap layouts between qwerty and colemak.
Why this is a little bit sucky: I sometimes forget to toggle into qwerty and accidentally rotate things in my factory without noticing. I tend to only realize when something stops working

The alternative is manually rebind everything in the settings to conform to colemak T_T

Proposed solution: Include a way to select what keyboard layout I'd like to use for hotkeys. Maybe a small dropdown at the top of the menu?

I realize this may be a bit of a non-issue as not many people use alternative keyboard layouts, and fewer still use keyboards with firmware driven layouts. I'm not sure how difficult this would be, as the game already detects what layout you're using if it's done through software on the OS. Might be nice for some folks.
