Pros and cons of mining/recycling scrap with quality

Post by pf_moore »

When I started on Fulgora, I assumed that it would be worth putting quality modules in my miners and scrap recyclers - all those high quality processing units :-) But I've found there's a problem. The one resource you can *only* get by processing scrap is Holmium, and the only thing you can do with holmium ore is to process it into holmium solution. But liquid processing doesn't use quality, and you can't use anything other than normal holmium ore to make holmium solution.

So, unless I'm missing something, higher quality holmium ore is completely useless, and all you can do with it is recycle it out of existence. Which makes putting quality modules in scrap recyclers and miners a two-edged sword - you get better quality resources (for those resources where quality matters) but you significantly reduce your usable holmium yield. Plus your miners and recyclers run slower.

To be honest, I think I probably haven't got fully into the mindset of Fulgora yet. With the *huge* scrap resources, maybe "who cares if I trash some stuff" is the way to think of it? But at the moment, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't use quality modules in the scrap mining and processing chain...?

Quality holmium ore is not completely useless, you can still make (regular) holmium solution from it, since you should also be getting enough quality stones. There's just no particular benefit to its quality.

Also, dealing with it is a little annoying, either by recipe switching or the duplicate chemplants for it.

It would be nice if fluid recipes at least got a production bonus with quality ingredients.

You can change the recipe on holmium solution production to use quality holmium ore. Yes, the fluid doesn't have any quality, but it is a use for the quality ore.

Also I think you're on to something with "who cares if I trash some stuff." ;)

There is no downside to using quality modules in your miners and recyclers if you want to have more quality items. All items can be used, even if legendary holmium ore does not set itself apart from its normal quality counterpart - it is still usable. You will need to recycle items on Fulgora out of existence eventually - there is no way around it as you will hit a storage limit. The art of it is making use of as much as possible.

Ah! I didn't see that you could do that. That helps. Although I think just trashing stuff is longer term the better option. I'm just not sure I've accepted that yet - all those boxes of pistols, wood and burner miners are looking accusingly at me :-)

The discerning engineer of modern times does not trash stuff, he recycles. That is absolutely fine.
