What is 'Lightning reach' and how do you improve it?

Don't know how to use a machine? Looking for efficient setups? Stuck in a mission?

What is 'Lightning reach' and how do you improve it?

Post by macdjord »

The range for normal-quality Lightning Rods and Lightning Collectors are listed as '15 + Lightning reach' and '25 + Lightning reach' respectively. When I saw this, I initially assumed it would be something like worker robot speed: 15/25 was the base value, but there would be some research (possibly infinite) which would increase it. However, I can't find any research that lists improving 'Lightning reach' as an effect.

Lightning reach is not something you can change as far as i understand it.

The coverage of the collectors are fix, the smaller one, cover a smaller area, and quality increases the radius of coverage.

"Lightning reach" i understood as an extra distance of coverage, meaning either that lightning coming from outside the circular visible "coverage area" but that would end up on this area are still prevented from doing damage, and/or that lightning is prevented from being generated in the "covered area" and as such, the area immediatly outside of it is somewhat protected from lightning originating from the "covered area" making them a little safer, and "extending" the coverage of the tower.

I may be wrong but i thought this is a way to indicate that it's not a 100% "safe/not safe" mechanism, it is only 100% safe in the area visible as highlighted, but there is a some extension due to the nature of lightning strikes.

My hypothesis is that it's the extra coverage you get beyond a simple circle around the lightning rod, if you have several of them. Like if you have them around your perimeter, you can often remove the ones in the middle without losing coverage there. And if there's a hole in the middle you can just move a perimeter rod a little and often the hole gets plugged completely.

So lightning reach is based on the location of the rods relative to each other, and not something intrinsic to them. Something like a 2D Faraday cage.
