Reddit is terrible for Factorio spoilers

Post by NineNine »

I haven't played through Space Age yet because I just haven't had time. And WOW, I really made a mistake looking at the Factorio reddit. It's 100% spoilers, up and down the whole page. And, since it's all images right when the page loads, there's no way to avoid the spoilers. What a bummer!

The assumption was made that if all Space Age related discussions were considered spoilers, then the entire subreddit would become 100% spoiler tagged, and that just seemed silly. So the decision was made (not without some discussion and opposing opinions), that attempting to consider all Space Age content as defacto spoilers would be a futile effort - that nobody wanted to undertake - mods included.

And that ended the sub-discussion as to exactly what to consider a spoiler, which wasn't itself going anywhere useful. Some people wanted everything considered a spoiler the moment you launched a rocket. Some people wanted to draw the line about where the devs did with FFFs (
Vulcanis, Demolishers, Fulgora, Lightning, Gleba, Pentapods
- all non spoilers, but the
Exoskeleton, Aquilo and beyond
considered spoilers). And nobody agreed...

The only real spoilers I felt I shouldn’t have seen were how to deal with the fauna …

I'm not saying there's a good solution to Reddit and spoilers. Reddit is designed to be infinite web pages with photos for all (most) of the posts. By contrast, I can read in this forum, and simply not read about Vulcanus or Fulgora, or any of the new stuff. I used to look at Reddit for interesting designs, but I won't be touching it again until I've played all the way through SA at least a few times.

As you can view all content of the game in the factoripedia, the game itself is a spoiler for itself...

What you see as spoilers is actually just the game content. The real spoiler is how to deal with that game content. So if you see a topic that deals with some unknown game content, skip it. For example, it's not a big surprise you see a new enemy on Vulcanus called the demolisher. This is no spoiler. It's a surprise how it attacks and how to fight it - how to do this would be a spoiler. It even has a main menu simulation on its own. The same with every one of the planets you visit.

And all game content can be seen by inspecting the technology tree right from the start. Start a new game, inspect the description of all the locked science packs, and you see everything you will encounter. Available from minute 0. Even faster than inspecting Factoriopedia.

So if you see some unknown topic, just skip that thread. Otherwise everything about the game could be considered a secret and no discussion at all allowed, which is not feasible. Even such basic things like advanced oil processing can also be considered a spoiler if you start to complain about spoilers.

I had no idea that there was a new enemy on another planet until I saw it on Reddit. No idea. I didn't know it was called a "demolisher" until you just said it. I find a lot of fun in exploring these new parts of the game! I'd like to continue to talk about 2.0, (and 1.1), but I really don't want to know what I'm going to find on other planets before I get there. I did just recently build a space platform for the first time, but unfortunately, I knew what they were used for and how they are used when I saw the pictures on Reddit.

A lot of the surprises have already been ruined for me. It kind of stinks because you can't be re-surprised.

In my own perception, reading about things is a teaser for me. I read about its existence, and now I want to experience this myself! It increases my desire to explore the game. This increases fun for me. I skip in depth discussions of the things of course.
And when I encounter this teased thing ingame myself, it's a discovery. Now I actually encountered it myself what others wrote about. And finally, I go and deal with it. That's the third time I'm thrilled about a new thing.

This is different to story spoilers in games like an RPG. It's of course a spoiler if you learn your old friend turned out to be the big bad final end boss.

In a factory builder, it's more how you do things. For example, seeing how the new assembling machines and mechanics work as a whole is a surprise, since they alter the play style and some game paradigms. It's not just the same functionality faster and with new texture, it's altering what you can do in the game. This is something that even cannot be spoilered - you have to encounter it yourself to realize what it is about.
