Audio Drivers Crashing?

Post by Kyutsuru »

Okay, so I've recently been playing Factorio on my PC. When I do, the sounds are distorted with a humming/crackling sound which seems to 'pulse' at a rate of about twice a second. When I tab out, it gradually gets better again until the audio returns to normal, but once I tab back in it gradually seems to 'build up' until after about a minute it's pretty distracting. If I have any audio on in the background the distortion effects that too, but I've tried it without any audio but the game and the effect still persists.

I'm running on Linux Ubuntu 6.8.0-49-generic x86_64 (The most up-to-date LTS version), and I never had this issue back when I was playing on Windows. Also I've tried other games and they don't seem to have this issue, it's only Factorio that seems to cause it

Well, for some reason (and this has happened a couple times now) when a research completes it usually plays the little fanfare sound, I assume this is just one too many sound effects for the audio engine to handle because instead of playing that fanfare everything goes silent, Factorio, anything I have playing in the background, and even after quitting the game (which when I hit the exit button on the menu it gives me the "This program is not responding" force quit prompt) everything is totally dead silent, no audio from any sources which is what leads me to beleive that the audio drivers have crashed completely, but I'm not sure how to prevent this problem.

Only way I've found to fix this so far is by restarting my whole pc. I've tried killing and re-starting pulse audio (though I've no idea what that is or what it does) I've also tried alsa force-reload which also doesn't seem to work. Any other tips or advice would be much appreciated

You can try changing the preferred audio driver in Sound Settings (requires restarting the game) from Default (PulseAudio) to PipeWire.
