[2.0.15] Game never starts, stuck at 50% loading sprites

I'm just installed factorio on my laptop. It's working great on my main PC but now I want it on my laptop for reasons. It is not the fastest but CPU and memory doesn't seem nearly exhausted.

Anywho, the log that follow is what I get when starting with

factorio.exe --single-thread-loading --gfx-safe-mode --graphics-quality medium
. I read somewhere about somone having problem with parallell sprite loading so I added the single-thread option, safe gfx mode seemed like it might help and medium graphics because slow computer.
The log ends the same way if I start without those options.

Anyone have an idea?

I solved it myself.

Not 100% what helped but I think it was updating the driver for the AMD GPU integrated in the CPU. I have a separate nvidia GPU which is used according to the log file but it looks like the AMD update helped. Maybe the sprites are generated/loaded using the onboard graphics?

It would have been great if the error was detected somehow. Probably hard but a timeout on the sprite loading maybe? When it worked, it took 23s to load the sprites so a 5min timeout?

I recently had a similar issue with the latest version, 2.0.28. Factorio would just get stuck on loading, the cursor would change to the spinning donut, and never resolve. Trying to pull up Resource Monitor would fade out the window and offer to end process. I could only terminate by ending process.

As it turns out, one of my memory sticks was loose. I recently pulled apart my whole PC to clean it and hadn't checked that all the memory registered. I have 2x 8 GB sticks. Looks like 1x 8 GB just wasn't enough to load Factorio. After re-inserting my memory and getting it to register, Factorio fully loaded again on the first try.

I see the current system requirements listed on Steam are 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended. That 8 GB looks to just not be enough with the overhead from Windows. Even with no other programs active, it wouldn't get past 51% for me.

I'm getting the same error, although my computer is running an Intel CPU. Haven't solved it yet. Any help would be great!

Any chance you might also be running out of memory?

Looks like there are some good tips here for configuration and launch options to reduce your graphics settings: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=9300.

Maybe give those a shot and see if the game's able to load?
