Bugs that are actually features.

[2.0.15] Pinning crude oil fields on the map is unreadable

Post by IsaacOscar »

I've been using the new chart pinnign feature https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-400 to keep track of how much of each resource I have left.
However it is completely useless for crude oil.
What did you do?
I open the map on Nauvis, search for crude oil, and pinned some of the results.
What happened?
See the screenshot:

11-14-2024, 01-58-39.png (232.3 KiB) Viewed 230 times
(Sorry for the weird colours on the screenshot, I suspect this is caused by Windows "Auto HDR" feature, the game itself looks normal so I've not bothered to turn it off).
What did you expect to happen instead?
I expected to be able to read the remaining combined yield under the minimap, just like I can read the remaining amount of the other resources I have pinned.
Moreover, I expected the collection of oil fields I pinned to be reported as one patch, not three. This is particularly annoying as the search results are sorted by yield, and not location.
Does it happen always, once, or sometimes?
The text is always too long, but only some patches of oil are split into parts like this.

On a side note, it would be great if you could pin resource patches just by clicking them on the map, and not having to use the search.

Thanks for the report. You can view the information in the tooltip for the pinned entry.
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

Certainly it's not a bug.

But given that the pin automatically has an icon of the resource type at the start, the description is practically superfluous.

So it might make sense to put the number right after the icon, and then after that, the description:

icon 2.7M Coal
icon 1.1M Stone
icon 3.5M Iron ore

etc.
