Can't see savefiles on disk, but Factorio does

Post by ikazzone »

I have a couple of recent savefiles from the last two days but I am not able to see them under %AppData%\Factorio\saves. All of the savefiles up to November 1st are there, but not the most recent ones in the following two days. I'll list other aspects of this extra weird issue in no particular order as I am not able to figure out who, among Factorio, Steam and Windows, could be the culprit:
  • I have Factorio 2.0.14 installed, always up-to-date via Steam updates;
  • I explored the Factorio savegame folder with shown hidden files;
  • The Factorio executable correctly detects and loads all my savegames, including the recent ones I cannot see in the savefile folder: from the Factorio game, (almost, see below) everything is up-to-date, blueprint library included;
  • I am manually searching and backing up the savefiles from the savegame folder as Steam Cloud synchronization failed a couple of times in these days and I lost some savegames. It seems that the Steam Cloud version of the savegame folder had priority over the local folder, even though it was not as recent. It felt like Steam deleted the most recent files to sync the remote with the locale (to use git lingo). No conflicting versions message appeared from Steam. I was blaming Steam for deleting my stuff but now, as I don't spot savefiles in the savegame folder, I believe Steam Cloud may be innocent;
  • I have enough space on Steam Cloud: 5GB occupied, 18GB available, as Steam reports;
  • Steam Cloud storage options for Factorio is activated;
  • In folder %AppData%\Factorio\saves, file "steam_autocloud.vdf" is up-to-date to today (November 4th), so the savegame folder has no writing limitations;
  • I started Space Age expansion in Italy on my personal PC. I am now in Switzerland and playing with a laptop. On this laptopt, Factorio installation and savegame syncing (pc->cloud->laptop) with Steam Cloud went perfectly smooth;
  • Since I am playing with the laptop in Switzerland, there have been proper syncing behaviours and I could find some savefiles in %AppData%\Factorio\saves that have been created with the laptop in Switzerland, so the Steam Cloud savegame system does work sometimes;
  • I can't see the most recent files in Steam Cloud, only the ones up to November 1st., including some created in Switzerland from the laptop;
  • Steam client always says that cloud syncing is up-to-date;
  • After launching Factorio, a message with "Cannot connect with SteamAPI[...]" appears. It seems random, I think I remember not appearing a couple of times since I am in Switzerland. It never happened from my PC in Italy;
  • Achievements and game tips are reset every time I launch Factorio and SteamAPI fails;
  • The laptop I am using (HP Elitebook, Windows 11 Pro, build 23H2 22631.4317) is a corporate laptop. My Windows account has administration rights but, being company-provided, I suspect certain things may be locked. I already had extremely weird issues with Visual Studio (PoS!!!), as some part of Windows (maybe some Register entries?) are read-only and the OS does not allow writing operations. As a C++ software developer myself, it was maddening. This OS feels screwed up;
  • OS-wise, company-installed OneDrive (PoS!!!) is activated;
  • I use a VPN service to access the company intranet from remote. With the VPN activated, Steam is locked but of course I don't play Factorio with the VPN activated. Maybe the VPN daemon should not be active at all?
  • I am terrified of opening Steam and Factorio again, as I fear I can loose progress another time; I just don't want to rebuild Vulcanus a third time;
  • Off-topic but anyway: in order to "backup" my base on Vulcanus, I blueprinted it and tried to export it as a string to a txt file. Pasting to Notepad++ does not work. The universe just does not want me to backup my progresses. Maybe it's karma as in these days I should be working instead of playing Space Age;
I don't really hope you may reproduce such behaviour, but maybe you can tell me how come the Factorio executable detects savefiles that seem to not exist in the savegame folder. Do you implement some savegame caching system?

I apologize for the long report. Your game is awesome, your professionalism is inspiring, your commercial policies are a blessing, your Space Age expansion is heroin. Thanks!

Re: Can't see savefiles on disk, but Factorio does

My laptop sports COMODO antivirus (PoS!!!). After some digging, I found the Factorio executable in the list of the blocked executables. I guess this terrible antivirus blocks any kind of I/O operations of all blocked executables, so that no there was internet access for Factorio (hence SteamAPI connection failures), and its savefiles were created in some contained environment (hence no savefiles in save folder)... Also copypasting was blocked, I guess, so no backing up a base by blueprint export. That explains everything.

Absolutely no message regarding blocking and containing the Factorio executable appeared. I unlisted Factorio and now everything works as expected. I lost my progress again, but at least I solved the issue. I have to design and build Vulcanus for the third time... Uff...
