Saved games, where's the offical dir they're in?

Post by MadJackPrime »

For the last three times I've updated I've had problem with my saved games...

The first time I downloaded the ZIP file, opened it, dumped the content into the installed directory and restarted the game. My saved game was not in the list so I happily started a new one.
Second time, I thought, "Well, I sure don't want to restart AGAIN." then downloaded the installer version. I got a similar result, but at that point I found out that there were files in the .../factorio/saves/ and ALSO in .../roaming/factorio/saves/.
Third time, today knowing files are placed (moved?) at two different places, I downloaded the ZIP file again, overwrote everything and after starting the game, only an older save game (17 hours previous to current, up to date game) is the only option to load from. That file is in .../factorio/saves/; not the "roaming" one.

So... I'm guessing here, but I think when there's a new version, previous version save files are moved into the roaming profile?

- Is there a reason why this happens?
- What's the justification of that?
- Why am I not informed the files were moved?
- The previous version files are perfectly fine for having played hours upon hours after copying them back where the game recognizes them. So I can safely say it's not a compatibility issue.

Specs:
Win7 x64
16 G DDR3
i7 2600K
GTX 660

Install dir: G:\Games\Factorio (as opposed to default install dir. [could that be the issue, if the above is really an issue?]).

Thanks for the answer, but I should have mentioned that originally the game was installed using the installer, not the ZIP version.

Are you suggesting patching (updating) with the ZIP is making the game behave differently?

Yes. Because the zip comes with its own config file that tells it saves are in the program directory.

Always update the installer version with the installer version. Always update the zip version with the zip version.

Or use the in game patcher.

Thanks.

I've tried that, but even though all the entered credentials are right, it doesn't seem to work. I'm not getting any error message or anything. I'll look into it later, but it might fix that issue for good.

Make sure you have experimental updates enabled in options - all the 0.12.x require it to update since they are experimental.
