[0.10.8] "space" fires combat shotgun out into the open

Post by zyrus »

Hi,

After installing 0.10.8 pressing "space" when combat shotgun is enabled fires into the open normally one have to press "c" for that to happen.
Does not apply to sub-machinegun.

Keep up the good work.

This is a feature not a bug, because shotgun doesn't need a target for it to shoot, where submachine gun and pistol does(that's why you have to manually target with c on those weapons).

...no, maybe I was unclear.

I'm aware of the difference shotgun/submachine gun.

The "bug" is when I press "space" standard key for fire at targeted alien, it should not fire at non alien target. If it does there's no difference between "space" and "c" (standard key bindings).

If I target a tree and press "space" the submachine gun does not fire, only if I press "c".

You weren't unclear, it's intended and has been that way for a long time.

So... I had a lot of trouble using the movement keys along with the spacebar to shoot. I decided to change the hotkey to left mouse button and it works GREAT... move with let hand and click to shoot with right hand, it's very intuitive. Sometimes I go out and kill biters with my shotgun and forget to switch back to my SMG and open my chest where I keep my Alien Artifacts and... BOOM! lol But yeah, it's working as it always did and how it was designed.

This may be intended behavior, but I'd like to call that intention back into question. The pistol and the sub-machine gun both train the user to think of the space bar as a gun with a safety. If there are no enemies around, it won't do anything harmful, whereas the c key is "no really, just fire my weapon". Why should the shotgun behave differently in that respect? It's a surprising and inconsistent behavior, that leads to a negative experience (accidentally destroying your own stuff) regardless of the intention.

Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the wiki, forums, tooltips, etc. on either key bindings or the shotgun itself. Every indication to the user is that the space bar won't fire a weapon unless enemies are near.
