How do I set the filter on a smart inserter?

Don't know how to use a machine? Looking for efficient setups? Stuck in a mission?

How do I set the filter on a smart inserter?

Hi,

How should I interact with the Smart Inserter UI when selecting what item type the condition should depend on? (Or the combinator UI for that matter).

When I click the "item slot" all I get is a new window containing the text: "Set the filter". I cannot for the life of me figure out how to actually select an item type or see the list of items at all. I tried searching the forum, sorry if this is explained somewhere else or if this is a stupid question.

there are 2 different items slots, one is the filter

the other is the condition.

click the left box and select the item

click the right to select what to compare it against if you select a constant remember to click "set"

Your game is broken, I suggest disabling mods or reinstalling.

The smart inserters have 4 sets of slots (your picture shows 2 sets.)
  • The top most set (5 slots) allow you to place filters for the inserters. If any of those slots are filled, the inserters will only move those items.
  • The green circuit slots -- only visible if the inserter is connected with a green wire.
  • The red circuit slots -- only visible if the inserter is connected with a red wire (as shown).
  • The logistic slots -- only visible if the inserter is within a robobot's logistic network.
For the last 3 sets of slots, you can set conditions for the inserter to start working (X [condition] Y), where X is the item (click on the slot to set) and Y is the amount (click on the slot in 0.11 and earlier to set, in 0.12 and later it is set via the item slot.) and condition is cone of the comparison operators (click on the operator to cycle through them).

Note:
  • A smart inserter that has nothing set will not work.
  • A smart inserter with just the filters set and no conditions behave like the original filter inserter.
  • A smart inserter with just the condition set will move any items available when those conditions are met.
  • The conditions are always "AND".
  • The conditions and filters do not have to be the same item.

Thanks for answering; however, I think I understand how the conditions work, my problem is that I don't get to the point to be able to try it :)

Left clicking the first box gives me nothing but a window containing the words "Set the filter". In other words I dont get the normal filter list of item types to choose from, like I get from setting the filter on a smart inserter not connected to a circuit/logistics network.

I tried reinstalling, started a new game incase the saves were borked. Have no mods, still no luck. Thanks anyways.

Guess it might be a bug then?

It could be, but instead of re-installing, can you try to download the ZIP version and unzip / run it there? It might be there are something wonky going on with previous installations / updates / etc.

It worked! Thanks man!

Edit: The reason it worked is with unzipping the package the settings gets reset. I got the same bug again when I deselected "Use item groups" and "Use item subgroups". So that's where the problem was. I just have to get used to looking in those subgroups instead :)

Please go with this one to bug forums - seems like a bug in game when disabling options makes functionality not available.
