How much damage do the Biters/Spitter/Worms do?

Don't know how to use a machine? Looking for efficient setups? Stuck in a mission?

How much damage do the Biters/Spitter/Worms do?

Post by Peter34 »

I tried looking in the wiki, but they don't cite how much damage the various categories and sizes of enemies do, only that the flavour of damage they do is Physical.

Another thing I'd like to know is whether or not damage/HP is accounted for with decimals. For instance if Albert does 2 damage to Beatrice, of a damage flavour that Beatrice has 25% resistance towards, and in a single hit, does Beatrice lose 1.5, 2 or 1 HP?

Biter attack damage is:
small - 6 physical
medium - 15 physical
big - 30 physical

All those have 35 cooldown - I'm assuming it's 35 ticks.

Spitters damage is:
small - 10 acid
medium - 20 acid
big - 30 acid

They attack every 30 ticks if I'm reading data file properly.

Cool, thanks. I'll do some "math" on that tomorrow and share it, with regards to how well armour protects against it and how well that "stretches" your HP, but I'm too tired right now.

Do you know how much damage the Worms do, and how fast they shoot? I presume they're doing Acid damage...?

Worms are indeed acid damage with following values:
- small is 10
- medium is 30
- large is 60

(And now I know why large worms are so ouchies :D )

Thanks a lot!

Here's my "math", based on the assumption that the player character has 100 Hit Points, that damage is accounted for with decimals but just displayed rounded to nearest integer (or rounded up), (and 0/0% native Resistance to Physical, but I'm fairly confident about the lack of Resistance):

Small Biters do 6 damage per hit, Medium do 15, Large do 30 (we don't yet know what Behemoth biters do, and if we know how often the Biters do damage, we can calculate not only hits-to-death but also time-to-death).

Iron Armor gives 3/20% Physical Resistance, meaning that it first lowers incoming Physical flavour damage by 3, and then reduced the remainder to 80%. Heavy Armour has 6/30%.

UnArmoured, the player character takes 6.0 damage per Small Biter, so dies after 17 hits. Or from Medium Biters, he dies after 7 hits (15.0 damage per hit).

Wearing Iron Armour, the player character instead takes 2.4 damage per Small Biter, so he'll die after 42 hits, not 17. Medium Biters do 9.6 damage instead of 15, so he'll die after 11 hits.

Wearing Heavy Armour, the player character takes zero damage from Small Biters (yay!) and 6.3 damage from Medium Biters.

Assuming a mixture of 90% Small Biters and 10% Medium Biters, average damage wearing no armour is 6.9, and the player character dies after 15 hits.

Average damage wearing Iron Armour is (9*2.4+1*9.6)/10=3.12, so the player character dies after 33 hits (although he's well ready for the ICU after the 32th!)

Average damage wearing Heavy Armour is (0*9+1*6.9)=0.69, so the player character dies after 145 hits, although again depending on how the game rounds he might die after the 144th, so I'll go with 32 and 144.

Going from No Armour to Iron Armour thus increases your survivability from 15 to 32, 2.1, and going from Iron Armour to Heavy Armour increases your survivability from 32 to 144, thus by a factor of 4.5, and going from No Armour directly to Heavy Armour increase your survivability from 15 to 144, or a factor of 9.6.

Or formulated more shortly, in terms of early game survivability, upgrading to Iron Armour more than double your effective Hit Points, and upgrading from that to Heavy Armour more than quadruples your effective Hit Points again.

And all that is assuming constant damage. If you get hit a bit, then battle ends so you have a bit of time to heal up, before battle resumes, Armour is much more valuable than outlined above. But players should definitely go for armour, even in high-difficulty MP where Iron and even more so Steel may be scarce. It's well worth it.

I've just re-read how damage resistances work, and the above is apparently not correct. But it seems as if it is only slightly wrong. I'll return later and re-do my "math", based on this information: https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/inde ... resistance
