If you manually connect 2 poles, the pole where you started determines the max. cable length.
E.g. it is possible to connect a big and small pole with the same distance then 2 big poles

Thanks for the report, the logic should be the same as when autoconnecting.
The limit is the smaller distance.
This will get fixed in 0.6.3
