btw, You don't need to install 0.10.12 then update, you can just install 0.11.21 directly: http://www.factorio.com/download/experimental

The game is usually backward compatible with saves.

[Nova]

Sometimes the developers remove the backwards-compability for a very old version. If that happens, you have to download a "slightly newer" version, start the game, save it again and then use the newest version.

All in all the game is mostly backwards compatible, but changed recipes or just new objects could make it useless to keep playing an old save game.
