Advanced Towers

Heavy towers, 2x2 size, slow firing, minimal range, each use ammo and deal area damage:
Canon Tower - same as on a tank, small area damage,
Rocket Tower - fires rockets, bigger area damage,
Heavy Laser Tower - use battery as ammo, deal damage in a line,
and bonus:
Rocket Artillery Battery - you load it with heavy rockets, throw beacon granade on a nest, run away, and... BOOM.

I'd also love to see more diversity in defensive structures, however they need to be met with appropriate enemies. The current three levels of biters and spitters really don't justify any more types of defense, since regular laser turrets are all you'll ever need. So in combination with the above suggestion there would also have to be more variety in size and strength of aliens.
