[2.1.19] [Linux] Render artifacts when using NVIDIA Optimus GPU on Laptop

Post by Astreae »

What happened:
Sprites and textures render incorrectly, not at all, or use the wrong sprites/textures.

What I expected:
Sprites and textures render normally

Details:
  • It seems to always happen when I open the game to the main menu, and the artifacting gets significantly worse when I load a save.
  • The issue occurs on both the experimental branch (2.1.19) and stable (2.0.77)
  • It only seems to happen when I'm using my NVIDIA GPU to render the game (driver version 615.71.09). Forcing the game to render using the Mesa drivers on the Intel iGPU using these launch options __EGL_VENDOR_LIBRARY_FILENAMES=/usr/share/glvnd/egl_vendor.d/50_mesa.json __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa %command% (Mesa 26.2.2) resolves the issue entirely.
Things I've also tried to fix it:
  • Verified game files through Steam and deleted the sprite atlas cache (~/.factorio/temp).
  • Lowered graphics and texture settings to the minimum.
  • Changed from Wayland to XWayland.
System Specs:
  • Operating System: Fedora Linux 44
  • KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
  • KDE Frameworks Version: 6.30.0
  • Qt Version: 6.11.2
  • Kernel Version: 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)
  • Graphics Platform: Wayland
  • Processors: 22 × Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 165H
  • Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (30.8 GiB usable)
  • Graphics Processor 1: Intel® Arc
  • Graphics Processor 2: NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada Generation Laptop GPU
I've attached logs from version 2.1.19 using both the NVIDIA and Mesa drivers, a log from 2.0.77 using the NVIDIA driver, a few example screenshots of what I'm seeing, and the save I used to test. (My username has been sanitised from the logs for privacy)

This is not something we have any control over. The drivers for the GPU are responsible for handling things correctly and it seems they aren’t. You’ll have to contact nvidia about getting the drivers fixed.

That's what I was worried about; I was hoping it was just something in the OpenGL implementation, not a driver bug.

We don't do anything different based off the physical GPU present (aside from detecting VRAM amounts and trying to use less VRAM when there isn't enough). However even that only detects the active amount of VRAM and not the literal GPU being used.
