Possible issues after compressing (zipping) mods

Post by ElRoge »

To ALL MODDERS remember that after ZIPping a file it becomes CASE SENSITIVE (some stuff only) because of how the compression algorithm works.

This might cause your mod to work properly before compressing, once is zipped and ready to upload it will start giving you path errors.

Also remember that factorio will only read the mod if its on the standard DEFLATE .zip format.
If you compress it it with a different algorithm or just store it (uncompressed) it will not detect it.

I'm not sure what you mean by that exactly. Files are "case sensitive" or not depending on the underlying filesystem and OS. One filesystem might see "fOo.lua" and "foO.Lua" as the same. Another may not.

Operating systems that have case insensitive files often still store the case you used, even if it's not relevant. And Zip will preserve the case, even if it isn't relevant to that OS.

What may well have happened is that you worked on a case insensitive OS (ie: Windows), zipped it, and it was taken to a case sensitive OS (literally everything else), where the case suddenly mattered, so it stopped working. That was not caused by Zip; that's just what happens when you change operating systems. You could have copied the mod files to the other OS directly and it would still happen.

Nope. Factorio uses the minizip library to handle In-Memory access to the Zip files. This makes inside-the-Zip filenames on Windows Case-Sensitive as well.
