Power Switch Improvements

Post by Almalexia »

A lot of things would improve if the power switch could be set to do such things as:

-limit throughput and direction of power flow (and have this changed by logistics signals)
-output power throughput and direction as a set of logistics signals (perhaps as a single positive or negative signal)

(Please don't tell be about accumulator setups, those don't work if the network relies on accumulators even partly due to solar or lightning, and are sorely lacking in any regard: we don't have to live like this)

From the point of view of each network, this would just be a source or drain of power

By hierarchising throughput between networks on the back end, it should be simple enough to prevent computer-crashing looping formed by one-way switches connecting the same networks in a loop: whichever produces the most by other means is the beginning of the loop, and does not receive from the end; the hierarchy changes without difficulty as power fluctuates

Example of usefulness: being able to set with a simple number on a simple constant combinator (or something more complex derived from another source such as current power production (a signal obtained by putting another of these improved power switches between power production and everything else)) the maximum amount of simultaneous power that all laser turrets in various places can simultaneously draw from the network: if the power switches output their throughput with the same signal as the combinator but one being positive and the other negative, while also listening to be limited by that number, then they automatically generate the regulation system that would lessen or negate brownouts while limiting laser power

Other example of usefulness: being able to set certain less important productions to only run at times of excess power, or to shut off at times of power trouble

And another example of usefulness: setting a section of the factory to (possibly only under certain conditions) only receive power and not provide it to whichever other network it is connected to; conversely also being able to set a section to provide while always holding some power in reserve (such as for inserters essential to power generation)

Perhaps this could be an Improved Power Switch researched on Fulgora
