Loading freeze bug [Windows 11] 2.0-2.1.4

Post by Alien_Squasher »

Ever since 2.0 released I get the occasional bug where loading into the game gets stuck around ~77% loading sprites, the game freezes, and windows itself becomes unresponsive.

It does not happen every time, it seems to happen at random. It has happened both right after a boot up and after hours of uptime, and only when initializing the game.

I thought it might be mod related but even when I have no mods installed (not even Space Age/elevated rails/quaiity/recyclers) it occasionally happens.

My OS is Windows 11, and it has been less than a year since the last factory reset. I have the most recent drivers for my graphics card/audio driver etc.

The only thing that is unusual about my windows install is that I bypassed the TPM requirement for Windows 11 as my hardware does not support it (according to Windows anyway).

This also happened despite repeated file verification via steam, and the factorio cloud saves I have are not many and not larger than 700MB, totaling about 3GB.

Additionally /sfcscannow reveals no drive corruption/errors. Factorio is on an SSD.

Steps to reproduce:
Have the most recent version of Windows 11
Repeatedly launch Factorio

I should probably switch to MintLinux

If you would post a log from the frozen startup attempt, someone might be able to help diagnose the problem.

But switching to linux is probably a good idea regardless.
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere.

Agreed. Nothing else to add. Instead of painfully sustaining unsupported Windows 11 install on incompatible CPU, OP should just nuke it and install Linux Mint. Problem will be solved automagically.

What is extremely interesting is this: Windows is actually pretty stable (1-2 crashes a month, probably north of 200 hours of uptime each month accounting for gaming, watching, work, and music production.

Factorio is in fact the Only process this happens with, which is what makes it so incredibly bizarre given it's extreme optimization and stability

1-2 crashes a month is not normal. Zero crashes a month is what’s supposed to be happening.

That’s says unstable or failed hardware to me.

Exactly. Every computer is able to work 24/7 without any crash, and it should. That's how I run my PC from signature. It's on 24/7, and it never crashes.
If your computer can't do that, it's broken and needs troubleshooting.
