[2.1.14] Crash applying blueprint then changing circuit value (random check fails)

Post by skyhoshi »

I'm not sure I can easily reproduce this.

Mods:
SpaceAge
RedCalculator [1.1.3] - after restarting there was an update for it and I've updated it mod.

I did about 30 mins before the crash switch my primary monitor Identified as Monitor 0 in the log, from a different inptu to the one that was displaying Factorio (doing work on a different system for work, and when work is over i switched the input for monitor 0 to the computer running factorio)
This didn't cause the crash cause this happened about 30 mins before. but I don't know if it could be contributing.

I was attempting to apply a blueprint i designed in a different map loaded in the same execution (didn't restart the game) used /editor and then reloaded the save to apply the blueprint to the original save. (all the same map just used the editor to remove all the stuff i didn't need, once i felt good with the blueprint i made it, saved it to the global cache and reloaded my save. where it ran for another 12 hours and then the crash happened.)

At the time of the crash I had
1. Applied the template
2. Started ~500 bot build on my person to supliment the ~200 i already had in the system
3. added more bots to the network
4. Applied a select and decider combinators to replace the ghosts.
5. selected the far right, bottom decider combinator to all "Or"s instead of "And"s which started all the inserters to beging cycling through all the options sent out of the decider, through the select combinator

I BELIEVE (don't know for sure, but i'm fairly confident) that I had closed the combinator window and attempted to move when the crash happened.

i've included my blueprints, not sure they will help but yeah.

I haven't attempted to restart factorio. and I'll report back if i'm able to reproduce this crash.

Re: [2.1.14] Crash applying blueprint then changing circuit value (random check fails)

Post by Rseding91 »

The crash is a corrupt pointer which statistically means you have bad or failing hardware. There’s always an extremely rare chance there’s an engine bug, however this logic runs virtually every tick for every person playing Factorio so it seems unlikely.

Do you know of any way to reliably reproduce it?

Re: [2.1.14] Crash applying blueprint then changing circuit value (random check fails)

Post by skyhoshi »

No, I was under the impression this error was caused by the total execution time of the process. or at least it was a contributing factor.

I don't think this is a problem that needs to be addressed. as you described it, it seems without a predictable pattern of reproduction, there's nothing either of us can do.

I'll be on the lookout for reproducibility. and repost/update if something comes along with repeatable results for me.

Thanks for filling me in.
keep up the great work.

NOTE: this is the second crash in all my years (16k hours of playtime, not all with me at the controls :D) playing and the first one I couldn't explain. Great work! :D

You are running Kingston memory sticks at 2400 instead of 2666 MT/s. Any reason for that? Is it failing at nominal speed, or just your omission after some BIOS update?
Do they pass memtest86 at 2666 MT/s?

thank you for this thought. I was going to leave it as is but now with this mentioned (Memory speed being lower than expected the max allowed) I should look into this.

it's going to take me some time to run this test (memtest) as this is my primary pc and i don't have a backup PC that can keep me working while the test runs.

I'll post back here the results.

as for "How" I do believe this may be a misconfiguration. a long while ago i did play around with bios settings and may have inadvertently altered this one. I was playing around with bios settings. but I believe most of those were interface (USB, PCIE, etc) settings. I believe I reset CMOS After that but I could be wrong. as my memory (mental), that memory(mental rememberance) was from over a year ago.

I haven't experienced any other issues. (random crashes [os or applications], failures [hardware or software], mem-dumps, my minidump folder is empty) but it's not to say that this isn't the start (first) symptom of a failing system.

I do leave my system running nearly 24-7, my last recorded longest runtime was 28 days, and the time before that was 16 days. usually only restarting when an update is REQUIRED or power goes out. I'm aware of the issues this can cause. (no advice on this is needed, thanks)

I play Factorio in such a way that I, Do a thing. leave it running to let it clog, come back and clean it up, leave it running and can rinse and repeat this process for days.

Again, Thank you so much for the advice.

either way look forward to a response. positive or negative
