Space Platform Hub 'Send to Platform' flag is redundantly self referencing

Post by Squelch »

TL;DR
'Send to Platform' circuit checkbox found in the platform GUI is mildly counter intuitive, self referencing and redundant

What?
After the recent enhancements to circuit networks regarding input and output, the GUI has naturally become busier with the additional settings.

The label 'Send to Platform' appears to have been grandfathered from Trains. More specifically, Train stations, where 'Send to Train' makes perfect sense due to them being seperate entities. However, due to the fact that Space Platforms serve both as the station and the transport vehicle, the wording is slightly counter intuitive as it is self referencing and does not target anything other than the platform hub itself (of which there can only be one)

I recently fell foul of overlooking the function of this flag by confusing it with other recent enhancements such as sending cargo to other platforms combined with the ambiguity. Confirmation bias then led me to report Space Platforms ignore circuit conditions as a bug.

The suggestion is to change the wording to something like:
Use Platform Inputs
Why?
Using precise and none ambiguous language leads to reduced friction for players. Especially for new players, and those that revisit the game after extended breaks.
The suggested changed text is specific to circuit inputs as things like circuit signals and contents etc are already catered for by default or with their own check boxes on the platform. The Radar 'Universe' channels can already receive signals from space platforms and make them available without checking specific flags. Space Platform Hubs are unique in having this setting.

I was confused by this also the other day.
But I think you suggestion is even worse, no offense. It's would introduce the word "input" twice, close to eachother. And it's not very clear in my opinion.
"Send to schedule" or "Use in schedule" or "Make available in schedule" are some ad hoc ideas. I don't think those are necessarily great either, but just go give some inspiration.

I think the Tooltips do a good job of explaining the usage:

It's the "send to" language that is ambiguous. In the context of the Hub and quite literally, it is receiving the platforms circuit network, not sending or transmitting it back. With regards to the 'Universe' channels, the platform's circuit network is already available when connected to a radar, but the hub needs this 'Send to' itself setting as if it is the platform sending to the hub before it can read the channel. This is not helped by the location of the setting being within the Hub GUI. The platform foundation does not have a GUI of course, and can be treated as the surface itself with the Hub entity built upon it. Are they separate or combined?

The tooltip does not clarify this unfortunately. Platform and Hub are both distinct entities in one context and also combined as a whole depending on perspective.

This might seem trivial or pedantic, but it could quite easily become a point of friction. Especially for new players, or players that have taken an extended break from the game. The literal comprehension of the label is opposite to its function.

Perhaps
Read platform circuit network
as the label, and combined with
Read the contents of the platform's circuit network, so they can be used for wait conditions.
as the tooltip might be more instructive?

Im not a big fan of having "Read" in both the Input and Output sections.
As stated before "Send" is also not great.
We're clearly and openly being pedantic here. I don't think it's a huge issue, but nothing so far seems quite right.
