[Donion] [2.1.9] Ambient Sound is affected by lowpass from zoom level

Post by Phnod »

Original context, I was told to create a bug report if my music was being affected in this way: viewtopic.php?t=134517
  1. What did you do?
Zoom in and out with the scroll wheel, either in character view or map view, or switching between a full character zoom and the map.
  2. What happened?
The music/ambient-sound had a slight low pass filter applied to it.
  3. What did you expect to happen instead? It might be obvious to you, but do it anyway!
I expected the music/ambient-sound to remain at a constant volume.
  4. Does it happen always, once, or sometimes?
It appears to always happen, it can be hard to tell at a glance but certain songs make it more apparent.
Here's a video of it happening: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t8zmpX ... sp=sharing
In the video all of the audio except for music is muted. (world-ambience-4 is the song playing)

I also took the audio of the video and created a spectrogram view, you can see the low pass effect with the grooves. I'm not sure if it's because of the low pass itself but I also noticed some slight clipping sounds when the low pass activates, and you can kind of see a higher pitched sound on the spectrogram just before some of the dips, unsure if those are from the game itself or my computer, but noticed they happen right at he moment of the low pass turning on.

When comparing against the original song data, I also noticed the music seemed to have an additional filter, cutting off all frequencies above 12000Hz at all times, unsure if that was from the game or recording software compression.
This was the recording software cutting off the extra frequencies, I'll attach another example with a better spectrogram.

Regarding my settings, the ones I remember changing are shortening the gaps between songs playing and transitioning between planets, and my audio setup is 5.1 if that somehow makes a difference (Though I think the game outputs everything in stereo regardless?)

Thank you for the detailed report.
I'm currently on vacation so I will investigate this as a first thing when I return.

It turned out this was a silly mistake on my part (also wind sounds were affected). This is now fixed for the next release, 2.1.12.
Thanks again for the report, good catch.
