Gun turret should have buffer for multiple ammo types and by default use the one with the highest DPS first. This way it would be possible to fill the belt line with more common ammo type that will also act as fall-over ammo, so we can have better cover rather than none AND at the same time gradually provide better ammo on the second side of the belt/on the other belt.Why?
I have defense line like that visible in the background; gun turret with inserter and belt of ammo behind it for supplying ammo to all gun turrets.The problem with this basic setup is that there is some period of time when you have to decide to have either more common ammo or to upgrade to the one with better DPS. Because of this you can end up with part of the base without cover or with turrets filled with more common ammo only, even if there is enough better ammo on the belt.
Technically you can manually remove "old ammo" from the turrets and technically you can (semi-)manually setup filter for better ammo with overlaying BP, but it seems like unnecessary hassle, especially in the game about automation.
There is also workaround with circuits, but that also seems like a bit of overkill for a basic turret defense line with 2 ammo types.
