TL;DR
Right now Platform to Platform transfer is clean leading to sterile space hub that is all cargo bay. I think platform to platform transfer should require fuel to be made or received. What?
Platform to platform transfer is super cool and really opens up space logistics. But right now it leads to builds like this. No movement, boring, too clean and feels unearned. It also makes it too easy and does not engage with many core mechanics of factorio.Solution
Platform to platform transfer require fuels, small rockets, something. Current idea, new recipe from a chem lab that requires steel, and both space fuel to make "Ion Thruster". Each platform to platform transfer consumes 1 ion thruster. This would be good for middle game. expensive fuel wise but relatively easy to implement.Upgrade idea late game / mega base. Advanced space transfer hub. A building that requires you to transfer lot of things heading to a platform with belts and inserts to package together into a specific building for a shipment. Far more fuel efficient, higher throughput but requires a redesign. Think space trains.
Why?
I feel like the space hub should feel alive, and right now it is too sterile. I want a big space platform with character, moving parts, that engage with the rest of factorio. by requiring fuel, now you have to think about power, belts, inserts, production speed, throughput. Everything that makes factorio great.Using the upgrade transfer hub, you also get to see a shipment for a ship destined for gleba get packaged as a transfer hub gets loaded up. needing more circuits to control but rewarding with much higher through put.
I think this is an easy way to get more factorio in space.
