Space Age on Switch 2 - Performance Problem with Platform Thrusters

Post by Akiru »

Hello,

I played a lot of Factorio on Nintendo Switch 2, I just finished my first Space Age run after around 160 hours.

I mostly play docked on a 4K TV. Graphical settings are all standard.

There are some quite noticable framedrops when looking at the smoke trail of thrusters when space platforms are moving. The 60FPS feels like it reduces to like 15FPS or lower. Around 4 thrusters at the same time are enough to trigger that massive lag. My final space platform had 10 thrusters and when it flew you had to be careful not to show any of the smoke otherwise it would lag really hard.

Another noticable lag seems to be on Vulcanos or Gleba when you zoom out all the way before it transitions into the less detailed map view. This doesnt happen on Nauvis.

When flying into space as a player, the transition from planet into space can be really laggy and slow depending on zoom level, noticed that especially on Nauvis and Vulcanus.

Most other spots of the game seem to run well even with bigger builds. Thanks for reading this.

4K is indeed pushing the limits on the Switch 2.
30 FPS is considered acceptable at this resolution. To get better performance consider lowering the TV Mode resolution from the graphics settings. 1440p will enable some effects, like animated water and 1080p should give good performance even with the extra effects.

I tried to reproduce your issues and the lowest I was able to get is 20 FPS while zooming in on the thruster smoke.
Gleba and Vulcanus are known to be more demanding but should not often go below 30 FPS.

Make sure the console is not overheating.
If you want to help further you can upload your save data so I can look at your exact case. PM me so I can send you instructions, if you want to do that.

Thank you for your response and help.

For others reading this, 1440p and disabling most effects make these lags mostly go away.

I have shared my Switch 2 save file to help.
