IR3 | gameplay question

1. Playing IR3 for the first time. I’m about to unlock gas furnaces, but I’m confused about their role.

From what I can tell, gas furnaces are more efficient than electric furnaces by default, but they can’t use modules. Meanwhile, electric furnaces can use efficiency modules, and with the -80% energy usage bonus they seem to end up more efficient overall anyway.

Am I understanding this correctly, or am I missing some important advantage of gas furnaces?

2. For power generation, should I keep using steam engines is it worth transitioning to petro generators?
