Microsoft changed the installer to Minecraft, so it required some kind of account. As a result my installation code didn't appear to work. Even with connecting to an account.
I remember actively looking for a replacement game, because I was building skyscrapers with a redstone silk farm in the basement. Mobs would spawn and I had a mechanized water trap producing a significant yield of gunpowder. But it wasn't worth investing more money into a replacement installation.
After some time, I tried the free demo. My memory of it is a bit hazy, think I was recommended the demo by a friend. The demo clicked with me and I bought the game.

Re: How did you discover Factorio?
This one time when I was like 7 or 8 my dad was like “Hey look at this game! Let’s try the demo and see if we like it.” and I was like “Okay, sure.” I got kinda addicted even though I suck at Factorio, (and also Satisfactory and other games like this, but particularly Satisfactory) and I still suck 5 or 6 years later. Idk how my dad found it.
