Manual Roboport Connection/Disconnection (Like Electric Poles)

Post by terradus »

Summary:
I suggest adding a new tool to the game that allows players to manually connect or disconnect Roboports from each other. The existing automatic connection mechanic should remain as the default, but players should have a way to override it.

Details:
The Tool: A new dedicated tool (similar to how wires work for power poles) to manually toggle the connection between two Roboports.
Visuals: Since the game already displays dashed lines between connected Roboports, it will be intuitive for players to see which connections they are creating or breaking.
Default Behavior: When a Roboport is placed, it still connects to neighbors automatically. The tool is used only when the player wants to manually change that specific setup.
Use Cases & Benefits:
UPS Optimization: Allows players to manually optimize drone traffic by creating independent logistics cells without physical gaps. This reduces pathfinding overhead by preventing drones from joining one massive, inefficient network.
Strategic Traffic Control: Prevents drones from flying over dangerous areas (like "no-man's land" with biters) simply because two networks were close enough to merge automatically.
High-Throughput Management: Essential for busy intersections where you need high Roboport density for charging but want to keep the logistics networks of different production lines strictly separated.
No Loss of Coverage: You can maintain a continuous construction zone (for building/repairing) while keeping the logistics networks (for item delivery) strategically isolated.

This feature would introduce more strategic thinking and planning into logistics design. It allows for much more sophisticated base layouts, making the game more interesting and rewarding for players who enjoy optimizing complex systems.
