Craft [X] trigger technology should say Produce [X] instead

Post by Osmo »

"Craft" here is incorrect terminology since it counts not just crafting, but also mining and offshore pump. This is fine in vanilla (though plates are smelted, not crafted, so it'd be more correct as well), but can be worse with mods, if another means of production is intended. "Produce" works for all cases and is what is used in other places in the game.

"Produce [X]" also feels incorrect for the same reason. What about "Obtain [X]"?

If you want to see the mods I've made, press one. If you need me to update a mod to 2.0, press two. If you're looking for QA, press three. If you've been waiting over 1 and a half years for Digital Age, bad luck.

Mods can override this locale to show what ever they want.

Yes, but it would be better if it was more correct by default

Maybe. But there's also the helpfulness of the text: what's more likely to direct a player to the outcome they want with as minimal friction as possible.

IMO "Produce" is more helpful and that's what the text should indeed be.

"Craft" implies you could/should do it manually and that's what I thought first when I saw this text until I realized it doesn't make sense for fluids... "Obtain" is equally bad as it implies you could get it directly from the map with right-click like ores at the beginning.

+1 on 'Produce' being the most general and clear default option.

No? It just implies that you need to get it. "Obtain" doesn't specify any particular method. (which according to the OP is what craft-item actually does)
Getting it from resource prototypes (e.g. Iron Ore) is exactly what both "Craft" and "Produce" appear to ignore. (automated or otherwise)

At the same time, it should probably be renamed to get-item internally, but I can appreciate that the devs may not want to break compatibility here.

Indeed in general it doesn't specify particular method, however since there is rather limited actions you can do in-game, some descriptions fit better for particular actions and after you use them, IMO "obtain" becomes more descriptive for specific action that is not yet described.

Here I meant that since there are other more direct alternatives like "Produce" - as in "produce by machine", or "Craft" as in "craft by hand" or do multiple steps of producing, or "Mine" as in "mine [ore] from the map", "Obtain" would describe "picking it up from the map" (like from the cargo ship or even as a alternative "to mining" fluids).

Yes, effectively it doesn't matter that much, most people would know after a short moment what it was meant to describe and technically speaking there is several candidates "for correct" version... it just polishing terminology. I'm still in support of "Produce" in the specified context by OP, for me it seems the best fit, especially after translating into my native language, but I suppose not everyone can agree.
