Enabling "set recipe" causes assembler to constantly change: How do I stop that?

I've tried this as many different ways as I can think of.

Attempt one:

I have a combinator reading from the space station hub.
INPUT: Copper Wire < 3
OUTPUT Copper Wire: 1

The output is hooked to an assembler with "set recipe" enabled.

I have another combinator reading from the space station hub.
INPUT: Green Circuit = 0
OUTPUT: Green Circuit: 1

The output is hooked up to the same assembler.

The assembler constantly changes recipe without ever crafting anything. Obviously, the problem is that the assembler is seeing two recipe signals at once.

Attempt 2:
I tried increasing the output value for Copper Wire to 100, thinking perhaps the assembler would read the highest value signal first. It still constantly changed, so I set that back to 1.

Attempt 3:
Only the combinator that sets Copper Wire is reading from the space station. The combinator that sets Green Circuit is instead reading from the Copper Wire combinator.
INPUT: Copper Wire = 0
OUTPUT: Green Circuit: 1

The assembler still constantly changes recipe. I realised the problem is that the assembler takes wire out of the space station, causing the wire combinator to read below threshold, causing it to output its signal, causing the circuit combinator to stop outputting its signal, causing the assembler to put the wire back, causing the wire combinator to output zero again, with the signals constantly alternating.

The end result is a more complicated method of achieving attempt 1.

At this point, I'm lost. How do I make the assembler read the recipes in some kind of order? How do I make one signal more important than the others?

So that's why the combinator interface changed! We can put multiple conditions in one combinator now!

Thanks for the link. I'm going to spend some time reading that tutorial and see if I can make use of it.

I appreciate the attempt to help, but I think this is beyond my ken.

I struggled understand how this system works, and what each condition does in practice. I thought the best thing to do would be to re-create the given example. This is convenient for me in any case, as it seems to do what I have thus far struggled to achieve with approximately five combinators: Switch between making copper and not making copper in space as needed.

However, I've run into an issue.

When set up to mimic the conditions in this image, the recipes on the crushers do begin with advanced processing and switch to basic when the copper threshold is reached. After that, they seem to get stuck on basic processing even when the threshold of 500 iron ore is satisfied. They simply fill the ship's storage with iron ore until there is no space left.

The tutorial page suggests this shouldn't happen, but I cannot work out what mistake I've made to cause this. As far as I can tell, my combinator's conditions are the same as in the screenshot.

What am I missing?
