Hi Developers,
Have you thought of developing a hexagonal-based version of Factorio game engine, for modders?
I imagine that many things are hard-coded for a classic orthoganal 2D grid, and would be very hard to adapt to a hex grid. It may be a better idea to leave this idea to the community to play with after the game goes open source (?)
Just wanted to share an idea (rhetorical question). Feel free to move ths post to "not implemented" or other forum thread since it wouldn't be applicable to Factorio itself. Note the idea has already been discussed here: viewtopic.php?t=95705&hilit=hexagonal&start=240

Re: [Game engine] - Hex grid
[Koub] Moving this to off topic : there is no reality where Factorio can be modified to be built around a hex grid, but the subject can be discussed here.
I've seen Motemancer (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3320980/MoteMancer/), an early access automation game based on a hex grid. It doesn't seem like it can scale the way Factorio does, but the reviews seem rather good for the time being.

There are methods of achieving Hexagons that some would consider Illegal. A determined modder could probably use the Event system to force Entities which are placed in Odd-numbered columns to align to a half-tile Grid:
