Is it possible to update to 2.0 in parts?

Post by 000 »

I haven't played Factorio in years. I'm still on 1.1. My internet is very slow because of where I live.

I managed to download the Space Age installer in about 3hr30min. However, updating Factorio itself isn't going so well. My internet has failed on me twice now, after I waited hours for it to get maye 20% of the way there. It is downloading, just really slowly.

I assume the problem is that it's trying to download all the updates in a single job. Is it possible to split it up into smaller parts, so I don't lose all my download progress every time it fails? A torrent would be ideal, but even updating to each incremental stage one at a time - 1.2, 1.3 and so on - would probably help.

You can either download updates to your 1.1 installation or download the complete latest version and then copy the settings over. I do not know what you mean with downloading the installer.
If you use steam instead it can recover better if the download gets interrupted.

Okay, it looks like I'll have to keep trying and hope my internet doesn't fail.

Unfortunately, I need to avoid using Steam. My computer has limited resources and having Steam running can cut my in-game FPS by 10 or 20. Its way of handling downloads is great, though, and if I could download Factorio through Steam but play it without Steam running I would do that.

I meant the installer for Space Age. It's an exe packaged inside a zip. It took a long time but it did eventually download. I assume it's a much smaller package than the update for Factorio itself.

If you download Space Age from the Factorio website, it includes the whole game. It's not just the extension, it's the full game, so you don't need to first update the base game.
As far as I know, any download from Steam does the same: Space Age replaces the base game.

if you're downloading it through the browser you might have better luck using a cmdline download tool, either curl or wget maybe, im not super familiar with them so maybe someone can get you pointed in the right direction, but these will likely tolerate irregular internet connections better than a web browser.

So it does, how convenient! I thought Space Age only included the expansion content, and I'd have to update Factorio to install it.

I ran the Space Age installer and it fully reinstalled Factorio, so I'm now up to date and able to play Space Age.

It turns out I don't need to worry about this for Factorio, but thanks for the idea! I hadn't considered using wget but it probably would work. I'll remember this next time I have trouble downloading a big file.

Thank you all for your advice, even though I didn't realise I didn't need it.

May be you will finish download faster if you simply trip to somewhere where internet is modern broadband and download files there? Relatives, friends, internet cafe, whatever.

Firefox can resume on downloads when the internet connection breaks. (It works. I just tested it). So just download using regular ol' Firefox, and it doesn't matter how bad your internet connection is.
