Crash reports/counts to mod portal?

Post by Farzag »

I have written a mod and I know from bug reports that it occasionally causes a problem.

Is there a way to surface these automatically on the mod portal? As a developer, I'd love to be able to see how often my mod causes a problem (by version) and if the stack dumps were available too, it would make it much easier to submit the right fixes quickly.

As a user, it might be useful to know the crash rate for mods as well, though they probably don't need the stack dumps :)

Allowing access to User Data (crash logs) by non-Employees/Contractors of Wube Software is not covered by the Privacy Policy.

Crash logs are not personal data. You can tell by there being no mention of them on the linked page.

You are not a Wube Software employee entitled to make that determination, and neither am I :-)

An unmodified factorio-current.log file will include many System Details, such as the WindowsUserName. While it is potentially up for debate whether this is “personal”, it is most definitely “identifying information” - and thus would necessarily trigger a PII review at any SOC2- or ISO-compliant software firm. The usual outcome of this process at most companies is to Redact the fields - or simply not share it without a Contract.

I am not saying it is impossible, just that it would take some serious consideration and likely an amendment of the Privacy Policy - and face much scrutiny from users like myself who do not blindly submit such data to unknown Mod authors.

For this to be useful, we don't need the full crash log, which might contain personal information - simply the stack dump that is shown in the popup when the game crashes would be so much better than nothing, which is what we have today :)

Why would modder not have a way to ask consent to user as any other ? We could clearly have a way to opt in to a contract if you use a mod from someone that allow him to get crash report when you use his mod. That simply a matter of implement such system for mods. The user could accept mods to have automatic crash report or not.

Also, I would be happy with only the specific lines of crash report from lua error. No need the full log.

You might want the mod list, too.

That would indeed be amazing. But I'd be happy to start with something, anything at all, rather than wait for perfection that never happens. Right now, I don't even know if people who download my mod have a problem at all.

I like this idea a lot. Perhaps a button on the stack trace that players could click to submit the error directly to the mod portal page?
