FactorioForum.com + Free Hosting — What Will You Build?

Post by azoundria »

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for someone passionate about Factorio to take over and put the domain FactorioForum.com to good use. I'm offering the domain, free hosting, and lots of help/guidance to get your idea off the ground.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to make their impact in the Factorio community and gain technical skills/experience in the process. Why just play Factorio (a video game) when you can build something cool on a website instead, and grow/demonstrate your own personal skills and experience instead?

Whether you're a content creator, modder, aspiring game developer, or just a passionate fan — if you've got a great idea, I want to give you everything you need and help you bring it to life. Take your Factorio experience and passion beyond just playing a video game into something real. Maybe boost your resume, build something real with a slight passive income, gain valuable experience and self improvement.

🚀 What I'm Offering:

• FactorioForum.com — the domain, free to use until August.
• Unlimited hosting — I already pay for this, and you’re welcome to use it.
• My help — I have web development experience and can assist with setup, technical advice, or occasional guidance.

I don't have a ton of time but I do have a lot of past experience building web projects. I'd enjoy helping out when I can.

📜 My Background / Story:

I had the domain since 2013 (I used to play Factorio a lot more). I thought I was going to build something on it but never managed to fit that in. Life is getting busier, and I don't play Factorio much at all anymore.

I have a computer science and business double major. I have experience running a free web host, developing lots of projects in PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, etc... Good problem solving skills. And plenty of "life experience" you can tap from. About the only thing I don't have is the time to build it.

I want to see the domain put to good use, and it's a bonus if I can meet someone cool in the process. I like to think everything happens for a reason, maybe this domain has a purpose to someone here. My main goal is to see this domain used for something cool that benefits the Factorio community. I wouldn't say no if we built a profitable project together and it latched on and became a huge deal, but I personally am happy with any arrangement that covers the cost of the domain renewal. That shouldn't be hard to achieve. If it comes down to money, that's not the problem and I'd work with you to make your idea at least sustainable.

💡 Ideas for What You Could Build:
You’re free to run with your own ideas, but here are a few to spark inspiration:

• A weekly blog highlighting community projects, forum activity, or patch notes.
• A blueprint or map sharing hub.
• A site for strategy guides, optimization tips, or tutorials.
• A portal for Factorio mod showcases or scenario downloads.
• There have been some additional ideas suggested in the comments as well.

Any ideas you have should be great and we can discuss/refine them.

👀 Great Fit If You Have:

• Time, energy, and a clear vision for a site.
• Passion for Factorio.
• Commitment to building something useful and evolving it over time.
• Openness to feedback/self improvement.

✉️ Are You In?
Reply here or message me with:

• A little about you and your background.
• Your ideas or vision for the site.
• The best way to reach you reliably (email, Discord, etc.).

📅 What Happens After August?
The domain is about to expire but I don't mind a single renewal if someone is using or has a good plan for the name. I can cover that entirely myself for another year if you're in. We just need to find a way for whatever you build to cover the cost of the domain (~$12-$15 USD/year) before it's expired the second time in August 2026. We could arrange a partnership, revenue split, or ultimate domain transfer as time goes on — whatever makes sense. I just don't want to keep paying for something that isn't useful to anyone.

I hope that explains everything and please let me know if there are any questions.

The name/offer is still available. With such passion for factory building, it's hard to believe there isn't anyone as passionate about building useful online tools, guides, or web applications. I'd really like to see this domain go to good use and maybe meet someone with cool ideas I can help bring to life. Any feedback on the thread or terms?

I think its a cool concept, and it would certainly be useful to have a centralized (and organized) hub of guides, strategies, tools, blueprints, calculators, etc. The best way to get it off the ground IMO is by obsessing over it and adding value to the concept. When other people can actually see your vision and what you want to put together, not only will others be more interested if you ask, but you'll likely have people reaching out to you. It will require on your effort at first, and the hardest part will be the beginning. But with persistence I can guarantee you you'll see your vision realized. 🔥

Thanks for everyone's feedback and honesty.

It isn't a huge deal if I need to fund another year for one-time or be the one managing the financials (if you're overseas and can't use certain ad platforms, for example). Just let me know your situation and I'm happy to work with it.

I've done my best to revise the post and hopefully it's more clear. Please feel free to let me know if there are further feedback or questions. Thanks again.

I've revised again for what will probably be the final time. I added more on my background/skills and improved the description based on the feedback so far.

I don't mind if truly no one has any use for the domain at all. There are a lot of cool things that could be built, and I had multiple people suggest ideas. I wish I had more time. I don't even play Factorio much anymore. I don't want anyone to feel like they need money or like there's an ulterior motive going on here. It really is as simple as - if you have an idea and can find the time to build something, let's connect and make it happen.

Havent you made the same topic like 3 or 4 times already?
Also why are you so hell bent on getting someone to do the work for you for free? (some people have said similar things in your other threads) seems really shady but at the same time low effort to me.
If you really want to do "something" with that domain because you think the name is cool or "sunk cost fallacy", maybe just put a single link to factorio.com on it and be happy to redirect people to the official site.

just my two cents

You don't start some project by being given a name, then asking yourself what could be produced under that name. Instead you have an idea, give it a name, then develop. So if you don't have an idea you don't need a name and will not start any development.

By the way, I would never even consider choosing a name for a public project of mine if that name/domain is owned by some other person, because that person is able to control access to that project. He might be benevolent and not misuse this, but he might as well not be so kind or simply cease to help with required ip address updates some time later. To avoid any trouble in the first place one would simply choose some free name, then register for himself with complete ownership, then assign the project to that name.

So what will happen is that nobody is interested in that name. It will expire if you don't renew, and as expired domain some domain squatter will hijack it and re-register it for the next 10 years, so that domain is actually lost. But since there isn't any interest, there's no difference.
