Game will not launch at all. Any advise would be appreciated

Post by SpiderDeX »

I've been having issues since trying to play factorio for the first time in years. The game just will not boot no matter what I try. The game gets to about 3% loaded then just closes itself. No crash report, no error logs. There is a report in event viewer that is listed below but I've been unable to find anything online on how to fix it. As far as I've been able to tell factorio is the only game that appears to be having any issues. List of everything I have done to try to get it to work listed below, after attempting all these fixes I was still experiencing the same behaviour.

- Reinstalled Game
- Verified Game Files
- Run in window safe mode
- Update GPU drivers
- Confirmed windows is up to date
- DDU and reinstall GPU drivers
- Run game as administrator
- Run game in compatibility mode
- Verify windows files through CMD
- Tried the non-steam version of the game
- Attempted -opengl (or whatever the launch condition is)
- Attempted -dx11/-dx12 but it came up with an error saying d is not a recognised option
- Deleted everything in the %appdata% folder for the game
- Confirmed no mods are installed
- and probably some more things that I can't remember off the top of my head right now

Not sure if all system files get checked by the windows health check, but assuming the os is fine I would guess that some software is interfering and corrupting. Try disabling anything anti virus or overlay creating. If there is something like an "windows dll checker tool" I'd try running that as well.

To add some things you could check:
- Health of your Harddrive with something like CrystalDiskInfo, alternative install Factiorio on another Disk if possible.
- Let Windows check your RAM by pressing windows+r and entering "mdsched" without "" (requires restart and some time)

I have tried running SFC and DISM through CMD and both came back with no errors, I have also confirmed on CrystalDiskInfo SSD is 99% health. Will try installed on another SSD and seeing if that solves the issue (Confirmed still same issue). RAM was checked a few months ago but I'll run Memtest tonight to see if that notes anything.

You can see if it's a hardware or a Windows problem by booting into Linux Mint from a USB stick and seeing if it works there.

Crashes in ntdll.dll indicate a low-level driver Issue somewhere in the Kernel. Exception code 0xc0000374 indicates a “Heap Corruption” issue was detected, ie some data structure was not aligned as the NT kernel expected.

Factorio initializes quite a few APIs when it starts up, from Graphics to Sound to RGB Keyboard Color (my best guess). Try un-plugging and un-installing the Drivers for any accessories - it may not even be something you have plugged-in, but is still loaded in System32.

In the worst-case, it is time to reinstall Windows.
