Im posting this as a suggestion because there is a workaround in-game, and either the workaround should not exist or you need to allow the character entity access to ghost cursor for items not actively in the players inventory.
For example, I want to place a heat pipe, but I don't have one in my inventory. I am unable to press E and choose the item to set down as a ghost cursor on the ground. This intially makes sense- I don't have the item on me, it can't be my mouse cursor.
So..I have to 'M' or TAB, scroll in, 'E' for inventory (which is the 'Set ghost cursor' screen when on the map), ctrl+F and start typing 'heatpipe' and then hover the ghost cursor item, press 'Q' to pick up a ghost cursor "item", then press tab or M to go back to my player view, and now I magically have a ghost cursor for an item that is not actively in my player inventory that I have stolen from the map screen, and I can run around and place items down with the ghost cursor-- which is the view I prefer, that is my character walking around vs strictly the remote view map, and I use my character with a highly managed inventory for local bot access.
Again. The workaround is cumbersome, but I find myself pressing this key combo consistently while playing and it would be SO NICE to b eable to just press 'E', and then hover the recipe in the 'Crafting' window to be able to press 'Q' for my ghost cursor for my bots-- this ultimately removes a stupid workaround that I am literally pressing over and and over while playing to the point that it's a weird muscle memory process that just does not need to exist.
I digress. This needs to be looked at and re-designed, getting my ghost cursor should be way easier even without the item in my active inventory.
Thank you so much for your awesome work, great game Wube!

Perhaps I misunderstand, but doesn’t this already work? It’s true that you can't open specifically the “Set ghost cursor” window without using remote view, but you don’t need it.
- Press E / open inventory.
- Hover heat pipes in the crafting section.
- Press Q / pipette.

Re: Fix Inconsistent Ghost Cursor Behavior
Not sure what I'm doing wrong but if it's not in my inventory I cannot pipette tool ghost cursor them unless I'm in the map ("remote view")
Is this a bug or a conflict with something else? You confirm it works as I've described? Is mine some mod-related error ?? It doesn't seem likely but then again I'm not sure how I would know

Re: Fix Inconsistent Ghost Cursor Behavior
Are you actually pressing the Q key to pipette, or did you bind something else? I had trouble early on with 2.0 because I was used to using middle mouse for pipette, but having pipette and "set filters" on the same button doesn't work on item-slot-like things (even if the slot is not filterable, and they said wontfix).
Re: Fix Inconsistent Ghost Cursor Behavior
There is a setting, that is not active by default (or at least wasn't back in the day), which says something to the effect of selecting an item as a ghost if you have it in your hotbar and click on it but don't actually have any of it in your inventory. This is specifically for when you are not in map view. I've had this setting on for years and years and never had any problem pipetteing anything ever, which makes me think it's possibly related to your problem, but I'm not sure.
