it seems more like this forum is dead now. it used be full of people discussing things. Maybe people have moved to discord or reddit?

There are definitely large communities in both of those places, I haven't personally noticed a huge change here though. There was a burst of activity when 2.0 came out.

Forum is dead? You're exaggerating. There's more posts every day that I am able to read in between Factorio sessions. I think traditional phpBB forums (and similar PHP bulletin board software) appeal to a more mature audience than the more modern but convoluted fast-past throw-away communication style on platforms such as Reddit.
It's a bit like IRC, which is used by older internet users, compared to Discord (younger users).
I do think that the forum categories could use an update though, as some have become ated or obsolete.
There are still plenty of public servers. Make sure to use the stable version to get the longest possible list.

That is 2.0.42 which nobody not on switch will be running and dedicated servers are not shown in general.

No, but I doubt it would help, the overlap of pc and switch having the same latest version is just too small.

Experimental has like 1 public server, stable is where you'll find all of them.
