Should I wait for K2SE to come to 2.0?

Post by exnihilodub »

Hi! I've posted this on reddit, but I'll also paste it here so I get the ideas of the forum crowd as well:

I've been playing K2SE for the last few years. I have total of ~1170 hours in game (not all of it is K2SE). I could never even leave the beginning planet, but i love the intermediate recipes it brings to the game. I stopped playing a while back, and now want to get back in.

I have been scouring the web, discord servers and devlogs for info about a release date for K2SE for 2.0, but everything is so vague about these two mods right now. So I'm completely stuck and can't decide for myself.

And that's why I'm asking for fellow players to help me with my decision:
  • Should I download the 1.1 from factorio website, and start a new game with K2SE?
  • Or wait until they become available for 2.0?

I'm also open for possibilities if updating/integrating later is possible:
  • Maybe start a 1.1 game with K2SE, and update the game from 1.1 to 2.0 when it becomes available
  • Or start a vanilla 2.0 game, and add K2SE when it arrives.
I'm not even sure if any of these two are possible.

I appreciate the input and recommendations you'll give me, and save me from this indecisiveness!

Continuing a 1.1 game in 2.0 works, but the quantity of Changes and new mechanisms added by the Space Age / Quality expansions also means that a New Game gives the best feeling of Progression. The improvements to Combinators and Remote View alone makes the jump to 2.0 worth any “missing mods”.

Adding overhaul mods to an existing Game is unlikely to go well, due to the breadth of Recipe and Technology changes. I am skeptical of Overhaul mods in general, but especially ones that add a lot of Scripted mechanics that are hard to update between major Versions. If a Modpack has not been updated for 6+ months since Release, then there may be un-solvable issues, or simply a lack of Developer Interest. Lamentable, but many mods are open source with a Permissive License, so we are all free to step in and help…. If we want to.

I recommend starting fresh (as un-modded as you like) with Space Age, and just playing the game until you get to the “Victory Screen”, to see which parts you like best - or if Spoilage makes you want to defenestrate your Computer. Then try adding some additional Planet mods or Solar System++; or use Any Planet Start to get a non-Nauvis start. There are some Mods that add complexity without too much hassle - AAI Industry continues to be excellent; and there are many Wood mods new to 2.0. You can always try the Bob’s Mods suite - I explored these exhaustively in 1.1; but have not felt the need to revisit them with all the Space Age toys available.

Good Luck!

The developer of SE is still active and making Factorio content. It's just been first party instead of third party recently.

Yes, I have read the Staff Page.

While the Question was asking about specific Modpacks, the Reply was pointedly not linking any due to the varying statuses, Licenses, levels of updating, and compatibility/integration with Space Age content. I vastly prefer the quality and finish that are present in Wube Software’ official Paid Expansion, over that in anybody’s part-time Projects. :-)

I am not too familiar with what is going on behind the scenes with krastorio 2 currently, but for space exploration, at least according to their discord, they are nearing completion with porting the mod over to 2.0. It would likely be possible to migrate a 1.1 save to the new version, but with amount of breaking changes caused by things changing under the hood, you would probably be better off waiting until it is officially released for 2.0.

HOWEVER

Any compatibility between Krastorio and SE is likely to still be broken by the time the mods are finished being ported, so you will likely be better off waiting until support between the mods is confirmed

Again, I have not looked into what the Krastorio devs are doing as of late, so you would likely need to ask them/take a peek inside of their discord.
