My 1200 hour save just showed this error, Corrupt Map: unknown quality prototype ID 197
This just happened and nothing out of the ordinary happened when i saved my game. I opened today and got that message, it says my hardware is failing but I did a system analysis and checked my drivers and restarted my pc and everything is still ok. I can open other factorio saves just not my main one, the most recent save and autosaves is from my test world and I can get into that one. I tried going through the steam cloud to see if there was an older save but there wasn't. Please help me, I have no idea how to fix this

Post the save and a log.
There are 10 types of people: those who get this joke and those who don't.

The log is there but not the .zip savegame, if it's a 1200 hour save, it may be too big for the forum ( >1GiB ) and would require external links

what tool could I use to show you the file via external link? (another edit sorry, here is the link to the google drive with the file on it https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TUnbTL ... sp=sharing )

The rules on the linked topic says 30 MB, i was wrong mentionning 1 GiB sorry for the confusion.StaleBread wrote: Wed Apr 16, 2025 11:32 pm (edit my save is only 272MB it wont let me add the file)
I have attempted to download the savegame, but i'm asked to login ? are you sure the settings are correct for the file to be public ? It may be on my side, i'm asking to make sure and also let you know the updated link is visible and hasn't gone unoticed.

You have quite high end hardware there. I suggest two stress tests first to make sure hardware is working properly.
RAM test: https://memtest.org/
CPU test Prime95: https://www.mersenne.org/download/
Run each program for several hours, or until each show pass without any errors. Watch temperatures while running Prime95, this one heats CPU up.

The fist post is a bit confusing, do you still have an older working save file of that map or only of other maps?

I have run both the ram and cpu tests and everything is ok, no errors detected. And no I don't have any other save of the world that got corrupted, no auto saves or steam cloud saves.

This was definitely a hardware problem but i have no idea how it happened. One of the beacons was completly missing 12 bytes of its data about an energy source so i had to reconstruct the missing data from other structures in the save file.

A single “cell” of DRAM is usually addressed to hold 32- or 64-bits of Data on the physical level, and this usually corresponds to (a multiple of) the system’s CPU architecture & Word Size… It is no accident that these numbers line up nicely; it’s much saner than using 7- or 9-bit Multiples (which are a widely-used configuration for some proprietary file systems & hard disks….). 64 bits is 8 bytes, so depending upon how the Addressing & Padding is handled a single “bad read” in Memory can spiral to affecting multiple Blocks of user-land data at a time.boskid wrote: Thu Apr 24, 2025 4:34 pm This was definitely a hardware problem but i have no idea how it happened. Too much of numerology here, also 1+2=3, half life 3 confirmed. /seugenekay wrote: Thu Apr 24, 2025 5:27 pm A single “cell” of DRAM is usually addressed to hold 32- or 64-bits of Data on the physical level, and this usually corresponds to (a multiple of) the system’s CPU architecture & Word Size… It is no accident that these numbers line up nicely; it’s much saner than using 7- or 9-bit Multiples (which are a widely-used configuration for some proprietary file systems & hard disks….). 64 bits is 8 bytes, so depending upon how the Addressing & Padding is handled a single “bad read” in Memory can spiral to affecting multiple Blocks of user-land data at a time.
12 bytes missing was right in the middle of beacon's saved data, entire 12 bytes were all part of the electric energy source: energy source type (1 byte), electric network index (4 bytes), priority index (1 byte), type index (2 bytes) and entity index (4 bytes); in that specific order. It looks like the cpu when trying to save a beacon failed to execute a function call and simply saved nothing from the electric energy source data. I was only able to fix this save file because in the hex editor i was able to recognize some bytes that were corresponding to legendary speed-modules-3 which allowed me to confirm it is the energy source data completly absent in the save file as all the other values were present except of the energy source.
Re: My 1200 hour save just showed this error, Corrupt Map: unknown quality prototype ID 197
Actually speaking of missing bytes, this issue seems suspiciously similar to 127574 i remember i was touching, but in that case there were 11 bytes missing, the energy source type was still present but rest of the data was missing. Maybe with the new knowledge of how to recover electric energy sources i will be able to fix that other save file as well (just as an excercise or to spot any similarities)

Nope, save file no longer available.

So THATS what the Factorio RPG Sequel is going to be based on!?boskid wrote: Thu Apr 24, 2025 5:40 pmToo much of numerology here, also 1+2=3, half life 3 confirmed. /s

Catching memory issues like these in-flight is a tricky thing at best, since activating Debug options usually changes all the addresses, etc etc. I think it is incredible that an attempt is being made to fix broken save files…. Is an automated fix up tool next?
