I think it may be beneficial to have a game setting that allows reduction of asteroid chunks in the game to improve performance.
My computer is getting a bit old (1080ti/ and I7 6700k/ 3200Mhz DDR4) and has found it's breaking point with a giant ship punching it's way through to the shattered planet. The problem is the sheer number of asteroids past the 1M km point and resulting asteroid chunks that need to be calculated and rendered. Slowing the ship down and removing thrusters has actually made the problem worse as many asteroid chunks actually slowly float sideways or backwards away from the ship. After a minute of movement there are so many asteroid chunks hanging around on the screen that my pc can no longer keep up with the server calculations and sits at 5 fps. When the ship is paused trust and asteroid chunks reduce, the PC runs again at 60.
I think it would benefit not just myself, but many others if chunks that were not floating towards the ship and therefore never likely to be in grab range were removed entirely when asteroid chunk count is high. Perhaps enable a setting that limits chunks so that higher end computers can see all, but computers that struggle can continue on.
I'm aware this can be fixed with a faster computer and this setting should not be necessary, but would be nice to have. It's a shame that the thing that slows my PC down is not part of the factory and not necessary for gameplay.
