Quick Question on the Successor Field

Good day everyone,

I was wondering what anyone knows about the successor list of the research prototype? I haven't found any documentation on the subject.
I am working on a mod that needs to know what researches depend on what was just researched (that was weird syntax for what research was just unlocked)
But I don't know if the successor field auto-fills or has to be done manually
