Trains and Quality

Post by yura881 »

TL;DR
Increase the weight and acceleration power of locomotives based on their quality, and for wagons, adjust weight only. This change enhances train durability and performance, especially in biter-heavy settings.

What?
I propose a mechanic where train components (locomotives and wagons) are influenced by their quality:
• Locomotives: Higher quality increases both weight and acceleration power.
• Wagons: Higher quality increases only weight (and possibly capacity, like chests).
This means a high-quality train would maintain its regular movement but become almost unstoppable while potentially carrying more resources.

Why?
Using trains to smash biters is one of the most satisfying parts of the game. However, biter evolution progresses faster than I can extend the length of my trains. I enjoy playing on maps that combine challenging environments with extensive train networks, featuring many biters and rare resources. My goal is to build efficient and well-defended outposts. Currently, while we can create nice and autonomous outposts, only a few Behemoth Biters can stop a train equipped with two locomotives. Enhancing locomotive quality would make trains more effective in dealing with these threats, allowing for smoother progression and better defense of resources.

Thank you for taking the time to read my idea! :)

IMO, locos should also get more fuel slots.

If acceleration power is implemented as a more powerful engine that consumes more fuel, then yes, we will need more fuel slots. That would be nice. However, I don’t know how complicated it would be to implement.
