[2.0.15] Inserter stuck loading furnace

Post by flomz »

Setup:
Furnace with single inserter which loads both ore and coal.
There is some ore in the furnace.
Steps:
While inserter is swinging with coal in hand, manually place full stack of coal into furnace.
Actual result:
Inserter is stuck in "Target full" state. It will not move even when furnace runs out of ore while there is still no space for coal.
Expected result:
Inserter will not be stuck when furnace runs out of ore, even when there is no space for coal.

Although it is a minor inconvenience which might happen rarely when player is cleaning their inventory, it is hard to notice and not something that a player would expect.
Maybe allow inserter to go over stack limit when it is already holding an item?

It's easy to avoid, though - instead of emptying your inventory directly into furnaces, have a chest that outputs on the coal belt and use it with priority before the main coal line.

Thanks for the report. I don't consider this worth changing. You can simply not do that if you don't want it to happen.
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

I strongly disagree with you that this is a bug not worth fixing. This extremely annoying bug has been around forever. It's extremely common that people want to dispose of excess crap (e.g. ore or coal) and try to dump it in a furnace. This will silently break the furnace forever, when the inserter is holding the wrong thing.

So what do you propose? Making inserters able to insert more items than player could insert?

Maybe add an alert that the inserter isn't able to insert things.

The thing is, whenever you change or deconstruct things, you get an insane amount of garbage dumped into your inventory that you have to get rid of. Dumping it into a furnace is the logical choice with (potentially) rather unfortunate consequences.

As someone, who has watched a few Factorio streams, this happens all the time.

A similar thing can happen if you remove an assembly machine and an inserter grabs something off the belt. If the assembly machine is replaced and set with a recipe that doesn't take the item the inserter has in its hand, the inserter is stuck unable to do anything.

Both your example and mine are now known mechanics, and have to be dealt with.
