I've not actually tried anything narrower. Zisteau is doing one with 10 height, yet to see if it's successful or not, but I'm doubting anything smaller than that would work.

you would like NEED robots for that, n~=30 would be a nice challenge, but... 10....

EDIT: you would need at least 6, so you can walk past the oil industry... but i don't know if you would even be able to set it up...

I just tested.

5 tiles will not generate any spawners. So no alien artifacts.
6 tiles will automatically add a 7th tile.

So 7 tiles is the minimum.
