Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
This was added deliberately. A giant chest basically lets you teleport items from one side of the chest to any other. It could replace all belting on the platform.
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
It could also replace all belting on Nauvis too, you can use cargobays to increase the capacity of the landing pad. Instead of main bus you could have a long lane of cargo bays with branches as long as a train lane and "place an item at one side" , "gets it on the other side" right away as mentionned.
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
To prevent overkilled cargobay, we can imagine "allowing put into cargo but not taking" or inverse
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
Since some of other things are "magically" transported via space platforms (ie. power)
Why not use cargo bays as "additional hubs"?
Or at least, make them pick up/drop items if they are directly extending main Hub?

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
Just limit the expanded inserter functionality of the cargo bays to space platforms. On nauvis it would function the same as it currently is.mmmPI wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 8:26 am It could also replace all belting on Nauvis too, you can use cargobays to increase the capacity of the landing pad. Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
IMO, it should either be able to be separate from the space platform hub(command center that you can pull from) or be able to pull from the bays. But having to be connected to the hub and not be able to pull from. A potential nice improvement would be to do both, be able to pull and be separate, but have a max number of bays that can be connected together(separate bays provide separate inventories to prevent teleporting). This allows the bays to function like space chests, with their function being a little more intuitive.
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
That still allows teleporting unlimited distances, just only in one direction. Surely "optimal" play would involve abusing that, which is not great.
I think if the devs were cool with that, then they wouldn't have made it so regular chests can't be built on platforms, right?r3xk3nnw4y wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2024 6:13 pm This allows the bays to function like space chests, with their function being a little more intuitive.

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
I kinda assumed they didn't allow normal chests for various balance reasons but the fact that the cargo bays seem to snap to 2x2 grids and their 4x4 size make them a good challenge to work around while still getting some more use out of them.
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
Yah I also would really love to use the cargo bays as a backbone of the ship, and you sculp the ship around it.
But the instant teleport item thing is a real thing.
From how the game have evolve since launch, I'm definitely not expecting them to allow this, and it would have a mod that add a variant of it that is a connected chest.

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
My first thought was how incredibly powerful it would be, when I first thought to try it. It makes sense that it's not allowed, it would be basically overpowered, both on planets and on space platforms. Pretty much all of my ship designs would have been reduced to "add cargo bays and don't bother with belting at all."
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
I think one answer, is to remove the Cargo Bays, and let me research additional slots.
Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
The cargo bays don't just give you more inventory slots, though. They each have a little hatch to send and receive cargo pods.
Also, I don't need a ton of cargo on every ship, and I like that a heavy cargo hauler has to be bigger than a little puddle jumper.

Thanks. I watched a video by Nilaus, and it makes more sense now.

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
I would also like to add/remove items to the cargo bay. I understand and agree that item teleportation is a problem.
Because cargo bays require connection to main hub, they limit the surface area of it and reduce functionality. I can't get items out of or into the main bay as easily.
What about them just being big space chests or something? The cargo launching functionality seems handled by the main hub.

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
This is just my 2 cents, but who the hell cares if you can teleport items with the cargo bays? Your production limit will always be your bottleneck, not the inability to move items to the turrets/factories, so who cares that you can teleport items? Also belts are cheaper and smaller than cargo bays. I really cannot see an advantage to "abusing" moving items faster than you could with a green belt with stack inserters....
The fact is, there are simply not enough slots around the main hub to pull and push all the items I want to. And since you cannot use chests on the space platform, I have no choice but to use the main hub, if i want any buffer that is larger than the belts themselves.
I really hope they change this, because I'm already limited as is.

That’s a hint that you’re not supposed to use any bufferszero0000000 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 11:26 pm And since you cannot use chests on the space platform, I have no choice but to use the main hub, if i want any buffer that is larger than the belts themselves.

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
I think you can get another two inserters out of that, by shifting the cargo bay over one step to the right.zero0000000 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 11:26 pm This is just my 2 cents, but who the hell cares if you can teleport items with the cargo bays? Have you considered that cargo bays can be built on the planet surface though?zero0000000 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 11:26 pm This is just my 2 cents, but who the hell cares if you can teleport items with the cargo bays?
"Belts or bots?"
"No."

Re: Posibility to take and and add items to the Cargo Bay
the cargo bays on surfaces can only be placed on landing pads. Meaning no items could be inserted into the landing pad, only pulled out. So if the cargo bays followed the same rules as the building they attach to, then you could only "teleport" items that were imported
Even then, I cant see an issue with the "teleporting" of items. if you are importing items that can spoil, then you could just move the landing pad, or move the factory closer to the landing pad. I don't see any other reason someone would even need to teleport an item at all.
And if its such an issue, why not just limit how far away from the hub/landing pad you can build cargo bays. Don't limit the slots for inserting and pulling items...
