Put autosaves in the same folder as the last related manual save

Post by MrNukealizer »

TL;DR
Autosaves should go in the same folder as the last manual save or the save the game was loaded from.

What?
It's easy to make a folder for manual saves, and that's great for grouping all the saves related to a certain world, session, modpack, etc. The problem is that autosaves always go in the main save location instead of that folder, which causes three main problems:
  1. They overwrite autosaves from other sessions that players might want to keep around. It also makes it hard to tell which autosaves are from which game without selecting each one to see the preview and info.
  2. It's hard to tell whether an autosave is more recent than a manual save without switching between two different places to compare the times of the autosaves and manual saves.
  3. When loading a game from the main menu, it results in an inconsistent default location to load the save. If there was a manual save in a folder since the last autosave, it defaults to showing that folder to easily load the saves there. If the game autosaved since the last manual save, it shows the main location and you have to navigate back to the folder to load a manual save (which is what I'm doing 100% of the time I click load game instead of continue).
My solution would be to change the autosave location when a game is loaded to the folder containing the save that was loaded, and when the game is manually saved to the folder it was saved in. There's no need to try to separate "different worlds" or anything else to organize saves in some way, because the player already did it manually by saving in a folder.
Why?
Because it would make Factorio's autosave behavior more intuitive, less frustrating, and better match players' expectations from other games. Most games I've played that support separating saves into folders also have separate autosaves in the same locations.
