Multiplayer Lag

Post by IC4TACOS »

Been playing a new Space age save with a single mod on ( factory Planner )

Got to around the robot's tier when I started putting down Roboports and upgrading our base to Electric Furnaces/Nuclear power, it seems as around that time when the robots got put down, the server started to lag very hardcore.

There was already some pretty bad lag when trying to fire your weapon if you aren't the host, the non-host player has to deal with up to a 3 second input lag when firing their weapon. With the placement of roboports and the increasing of the botnet the server seems to be lagging pretty heavily now ( not FPS or UPS, I'm talking rubberbanding etc )

After pinging our wifi and establishing that neither of our connections seem to be at fault, we pinpointed that the Robots seemed to be causing the lag to be worse. And when I say worse, I mean the non-host player was experiencing massive lag spikes every 5 seconds, actions being retracked, items not being placed, etc.

Does anyone know what might be causing it? The base is not that big, maybe 190 MW of power, and 1.5k bots on the net. Does anyone know a possible fix or what could be causing the server to be buggy like this? We are attempting to create a direct server rather than peer-to-peer in the hopes of fixing it.

I'm also noticing lag on a previously known good system for Factorio on a dedicated server, even at the very very early game there's noticable lag spikes. UPS is a rock solid 60 throughout.

I noticed the same thing, but only when running the Linux client. Random rubberbanding, but it can get pretty extreme:
  • I'll be running in a straight line and my character will suddenly stop, and I'll be deafened by the sound of way too many footsteps while the trail of footsteps behind my character go black from being repeated too many times.
  • I'll be running and it glitches, so I release the keyboard, but my character continues to glitch for several seconds, teleporting around randomly to nearby spots before setting back to the original location.
  • At least one time I was killed by bugs from this, running away as they chase me, then my character stops and slides backwards to where I was a moment ago, now surrounded by bugs.
This was all in the context of joining my friend's game, which runs on Windows. No dedicated server. As soon as I rebooted from Linux into Windows, and joined from there, the glitches disappeared.

I've also been seeing bursts of lag/desync when there are a lot of bots active on a different surface. I have been watching my FPS/UPS and notice during this time, my UPS is actually higher than it should be (capping at 95 UPS so far). After a few seconds, it does taper back down to the expected 60 UPS. We play local LAN and whomever is not hosting has this occasional burst.

Hoping this helps the devs narrow down what might be happening.

I experience the exact same thing. So is this a windows issue? Do I make the switch to linux for factorio? :D

Edit: wait I read that wrong. I experience that with both on windows
