v2 woes
v2 woes
I have a problem:
I did the upgrade to v2 when offered in-game. But the new version doesn't really work for me: I don't like the new graphics, some of my mods don't work as I'm used to, and some of the modified UI logic is just not for me.
This is not a criticism, it's just me not being that fond of change.
So I'm planning to reinstall the latest v1 again and restore my setup from before. But then again I do intend to play SpaceAge at some time in the future.
- Somewhere I think I read that you could switch back the graphics of v2 (not necessarily v2-SA) to their v1 predecessor? Is there indeed an option for that?
- Is it possible to have Factorio v1 and v2-SA installed on a machine at the same time? The program directory is easy, but what about the settings and config-directory (AppData)? Can this be made compatible for both versions, or would I need to copy back and forth on switching between versions?

Re: v2 woes
Biggest offender - ghosts - just became disable'able in today's Experimental update.
Honestly, I don't even know if anything else has changed - over my 120 hours of digging Navius 2.0 I didn't noticed any other changes as dramatic.
What specifically you would like to revert?
Cheapest way to do so is to use Steam for one version and stand-alone installer (from this site) for another.150d wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 4:06 pm- Is it possible to have Factorio v1 and v2-SA installed on a machine at the same time? Site version stores everything in its folder - Steam version uses Appdata.

Am I correct in assuming you're running Windows?150d wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 4:06 pm- Is it possible to have Factorio v1 and v2-SA installed on a machine at the same time? If you're on Linux, you just have different directories with different versions of the game. No installing required.
Re: v2 woes
It's just - all wrong: The color is too orange (yes, even with working the "saturation" slider in graphic settings), item graphics have changed (for the worse, in my very personal opinion) and the zoom level just never seems to be right. E.g. switch to the map, come back, it's off. Correct it, switch to the map - it's off again. Come back - this time it remembered your setting, which - this time - is the wrong thing to do again...Honestly, I don't even know if anything else has changed - over my 120 hours of digging Navius 2.0 I didn't noticed any other changes as dramatic.

It just doesn't feel right.
I see. I don't use Steam however.Cheapest way to do so is to use Steam for one version and stand-alone installer (from this site) for another.

Yes, that's right.Am I correct in assuming you're running Windows?
Re: v2 woes
I don't have a Windows 10/11 machine to test on any more, but I doubt that you'll be able to install multiple versions normally in a Windows install.
You could do a Linux install side by side on the same hard drive that your Windows lives on very easily (https://linuxsimply.com/linux-basics/os ... inux-mint/) and then run one version in Windows, and one in Linux. Of course, if you do this option, you can run multiple versions of Factorio easily in Linux, as well, if you'd like (I run 1.1 and 2.0 right now).
Or, you could do something like use VirtualBox to make another virtual machine running Windows, and play a different version there. If you do that, I don't know how a virtual machine Windows 10/11 would work with Windows licensing, though.
Or, you could use something like Virtualbox to make a virtual machine running Linux, and run a different version of Factorio there.
Virtual machines are never quite as good as the real thing as far as performance and a variety of usability issues, so realistically, most people would be happiest with the first option (just install Linux side-by-side with Windows).

Excellent!
I found that the distribution packet even contains a toggle for this: In config-path.cfg there is a setting
use-system-read-write-data-directories=false
... which, according to the comments, is set to TRUE in the installer and to FALSE in the ZIP version by default.
Beautiful; this is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the hint!

Wube really does make good decisions when it comes to supporting us. It's been so rare that I've seen a standalone program (that doesn't need to be installed) in Windows over the past 30 years that I didn't even consider that Wube would package the game like that. That's really awesome that they did that for Windows users.

I couldn't agree more. Their attention to detail keeps impressing me over and over again.
Re: v2 woes
One of my biggest issues with Graphics, was the Horrible new Shortcut icons for the wires. Impossible to see even with the mod that doubles the size of the icon pictures.
So I changed the shortcut Icons as shown below. (There is also a mod that fixes this for the Wire shortcuts.)

It is nice that we can shut off the bad wavy effects for the ghosts, but the new blue tint of the ghosts makes it impossible to see modded floor tiles that have other colors. (As shown in the above picture.) The top ghost tiles are supposed to look orange, the middle are supposed to look red and the bottom blue. I want the old ghost display from Factorio 1.1.

Re: v2 woes
Heck, you can have both a Windows and Linux binary in the /factorio/bin/x64/ folder and it will work across both OSes ! (At least it did for 0.16...)
(Well almost work, in config/config.ini, you'll need to switch between
and
)
I only recommend to do something like this though if you NEVER update the game version in that folder again : otherwise only the current binary will get updated and getting the right one for the other OS might become a headache...
(Has anyone tried a triple-OS folder with Macs ? Or even a quadruple one with ARM Macs ?!? )

I didn't really notice it this time, but then I hadn't played Factorio for more than a year, and hadn't read any FFFs about it changing, so...
