[FIXED] Cannot launch factorio on mac

I uninstalled Factorio a few years ago and decided to reinstall it today. However, when I try to launch the game, the app bounces in the dock but doesn’t actually open. It continues bouncing until it eventually stops, then quits on its own.

I’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, as well as restarting Steam, but nothing seems to work. If anyone has experienced this issue or has suggestions for troubleshooting, I would greatly appreciate your help!

Hey great to have you back! Looks like you have a few mods installed that are not yet compatible with 2.0, please clear out your mods folder and then Factorio should launch: https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_directory

I removed the mods from the folder and tried to launch again, but it produced the same outcome. Except this time, it did not generate a log.

Oh that's unfortunate. Are you able to run factorio if you download it from our website? You can use your steam account to log in and get access. https://factorio.com/download

Still no luck. It bounces on the dock, stops, then quits.

Can you try changing the user data directory to a new and empty folder like its described here: https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_directory

I just emptied the default user directory then launched the game. It created a log and the saves folder then the same outcome. But after it stops bouncing, it doesn't quit on itself now forcing me to quit it through activity monitor.

I'm launching from Steam, have never installed any mods, and have played *many* hours successfully in the past. I installed space age, put ~2 hours into a new game, and then this behavior started when I tried to play it again later in the day.

Happy to help with any info or data but wanted to mention seeing this as well now.

Is Factorio able to create a longer log file this time around? Please attach it to this thread.

Is steam running in the background while Factorio is trying to launch? If yes can you please try to quit steam and ensure its process is not in activity monitor anymore before launching factorio.

It might also help to update to the latest MacOS patch, at least my M1 is already on 15.0.1

We're still trying to pinpoint this issue. Can you try to use the download from the website with a fresh Application Directory https://wiki.factorio.com/Application_directory and without steam running in the background?

Updating my software to the latest version seems to have fixed the issue and now I can play the game, thank you!

I updated OSX and that did the trick for me as well. I should have tried to isolate the steam question first! But, all set.
