Careful what email address you send your key to...

Post by TheCraiggers »

So, it turns out Factorio uses Humble Bundle as a back end for purchases. This morning, when I gleefully signed in to Factorio to buy Space Age, I didn't think about what email I used to buy it. (In fact, I was somewhat confused by that- I was already logged in, why ask for my email? Now I know.)

So I fill out my CC info in Stripe and eventually get to a Humble webpage that doesn't load all the way. No worries, I can see I just got like three emails, so it went through no problems. I click the emailed link and find out that because I used an email that was linked to a Humble Bundle account, my key is there and I have to log in to get it. Trouble is, I haven't logged into that account in *years*. I still had the password somehow, but the phone Google Authenticator MFA was installed on is long gone. So I can't log in to get my dang key.

And now I get to wait up to a week for the "Humble Bundle Support Ninjas" to get to my support ticket. Not very ninja-like, if you ask me.

So yeah. Learn from my mistakes. Be careful what email you use if you've ever had a Humble Bundle account.

I have also had trouble with Humble and their atrocious support. Contacting support@factorio.com was a help in my case. May be for you too.

im really not happy with this. im stuck in much the same situation with a useless error message on the humble site "this key has already been claimed"
I dont get why they have a gift purchase button and why its not automatically added to my factorio account. I mean, i purchased it through the factorio site specifically to avoid bullshit with third party sites and they just made it worse :(

In general, it is save to say:
Using Humble as a intermediary for downloading was not the most user friendly idea - to put it VERY mildly.
If I decide to download from a dev. website I suppose that the email and contact I supply stays with the developer only - besides giving the producer the benefit to cut out the middle men.

Quintessence: pls change it to the previous download/paying system and

I saw people complaining about Humble and decided to buy my gift codes on Steam after all. Probably the right choice for now. Adding the soundtrack to my order hopefully made up for the slightly higher fees.

Annoying, but I did eventually get a response back from Humble. In my case, they removed the MFA from the account (with zero checks about who I am other than mailing from the email address of the account, which kinda makes me wonder why use MFA then) and I was able to get my key. Thankfully it did not take a week as their SLA suggests. Anyway, if you haven't done so yet, support tickets to them and/or Factorio should help you.

I can understand Factorio Dev's position on this though. They're game makers, and this isn't 1999 any longer; running a website is already bad enough these days and taking any form of payment comes with so many risks, regulations, challenges, and legal pitfalls there are entire companies that make their money *just* by offering this as a service. Hell, it's a major reason why Steam is so big.

This wasn't clear to me until I finished the purchase. Should be a more prominent warning.
Is there a reason you didn't go to GOG if you just (understandably) don't want to deal with the payment process?

I might buy a second copy, likely gonna go the GOG route then.

I presume this was directed to me, but I think you misunderstood my prior point. The payment process isn't arduous for customers, really. Standard stuff, just enter your CC info and click a button.

Where handling payments is a giant, massive pain is when you're on the receiving end of them. I deal with that stuff at work and holy moly it's nasty. VISA and MasterCard got together when a few US stores started skimping on security when handling card info. I think they may have also sub-contracted some literal demons from hell to help them write the security standards. Just to give you an idea, the "Quick Reference Guide" is 40 pages. The actual standards? Waaaay bigger. And if you don't abide by every nuance of it they will fine you into nothingness and/or disallow you to take CC payments, which to a business is just as damning.

No, I meant WUBE. Sorry I wasnt clear - the choice of Humble is a bit odd.

I bought stuff aeons ago there, and it wasn't exactly easy to login for me. Would've prefered GOG as a "third party"

For those of you complaining, read this: https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-171

TLDR - up to 10% of website purchases were being charged back on stolen cards, which cost $20 in fines, meaning for every $100 earned they basically lost $40. Going with Humble completely solved the issues, so it's never going to be "changed back to the old way".
